Using sterilized coir as a casing layer
    #23808986 - 11/07/16 09:13 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I see that lots of you are using sterilized coir substrate but I havent read anything about using it as a casing layer.

Ive used it on numerous occasions pasteurised but cant find anything on this topic.

Does gypsum and vermiculite need to be treated.  I see that Muda does nothing to Verm for the bottle tek but wasnt sure about gypsum.  Basically I ask as I used the bucket tek and it came up a little over field capacity.  So as I thought for the next few grows im going to sterilize anyway I could just add a little more gypsum and verm to get the balance right.  However I forgot about the casing layer.  Im going to straight case some grains to test them but not sure what to do.

Also while im here I shook this jar a couple of days ago and its fully colonised again but not really think Mycellium.  Im sure when I open that jar it will smell fine but wondered if anyone had any comments on that too.

CVG can be sterilized. CVG can be a casing layer any way it's prepared.

Hence . most people that want to fuck around with a casing just save a little leftovers CVG in the bucket

Some of the cakes that I asked about the other day were similar to your grain jar, well a little thicker. They have been dunked and rolled and seem to be very healthy. The thin looking mycelium made me want to think it was mold. I would think it should have a few more days to colonize. I literally remember my whole brown rice/vermiculite cakes looking like that a week ago. They all came back around and seem to be doing good.

Also I have never treated vermiculite as there is almost no nutritional value to it. This could be a mistake of mine but it has never give me issues. I just did my 2nd roll on my cakes today with straight out of the bag vermiculite. YES that's right I did a 2nd roll, 1st time they didn't pick up enough in my opinion. We will see if it comes back to bit me in the ass.

I had one that I took a chance on and shook a 2nd time when almost colonized. It has not recovered. seemed a bit dry so I took a chance and shot a few CC of sterile water into it. It still has mycelium but is not doing anything. Think it was contaminated. O well was worth it to experiment and learn some more.
