Wood Shavings / Sawdust Tek
    #23808255 - 11/06/16 10:49 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hi. Most supplemented wood teks I've seen make use of fuel pellets and wood chips. Thing is, I don't want to buy it. I do have a great supply of hardwood though, and a planar. I can easily make a bunch of wood SHAVINGS

I can also try cutting these up into more of a dust.

Thing is, how do I prepare these for say, a myco bag? How much water does it need for field capacity? Does anybody have any experience with these? How much wheat bran to shavings do I add? Too many questions.

Another question: How do you go about hydrating/pasteurizing the sawdust before? I mean, I see the teks say to put that shit in a bucket, then pour boiling water on it for a fat minute, then strain it. But that's with pellets – actual sawdust would just go through the holes on your strainer, no?

I was thinking about using a sander to get a shit load of sawdust, and the planar for the shavings. Does anybody have another idea?

what are you trying to grow?

sawdust from a circular saw is generally the best because of the particle size.  u don't want sanded wood, that would be like powder.

as far as shavings, the problem i've seen brought up is that its hard for the mycelium to spread thru that easily…a lot of open space unless u pack it in like a straw log…but then ur looking at NO supplement and plastic tubing instead of filter patch bags.

if it were me…i guess I would soak the shavings for a day in water.  drain it for a few hours, then see how it feels….heavy? light? easily compressed? maybe it breaks down further when wet? get an idea of the texture.  use the search engine too, maybe you will find a poster who does this on the reg and can help you out better technique wise.

Thanks! I have a circular saw but it's stored away somewhere and is a pain in the ass. I guess I'll lug it out

I would rather pick up cans and bolts on the side of the road all day or flip burgers for a jerk so that I could buy a bag of sawdust pellets vs ruin a circular saw blade cutting sticks to get a lb or so of sawdust.  You are doing this the hard way.  But it works in a jiffy I guess when all else fails.

Those shavings might be okay to use if you put them in a heavy bag and beat them into dust with a mallet.

As for the type of sawdust you want to use, it depends on the species of mushrooms you are planning on growing.  Some like fine dust, others more prefer chainsaw like consistency.  And some do better with specific wood species.

I have experimented with fuel pellets.  It costs way less than smoke pellets.  But every brand I've tried smells funny and is horrible quality though some species just tolerate this crap and seem to not suffer.  I think it is mostly ground up polluted garbage.  But maybe you might find a decent brand.  If so Id like to know.

For the smoke pellets for cooking, they are much better quality and you can choose the type of wood.  They are also way more costly.  My solution to this is to buy cheap 2cu ft bags of shredded mulch for $3 and pull the huge chunks out to use elsewhere, and the fine dust in place of sawdust.  I've never noticed lesser results in speed or yield fruiting off of it including shiitake, enoki, ganoderma species, oysters.  There is no consistency to the ratio of sawdusty stuff to wood chippy stuff.

The pellets however are ultimate wood chip loving mushroom food.  If you toss a little down on the chip bed to start off and either let the humidity in the air hydrate or just time it before a rain they will retain their shape and be somewhat more like a wood chip, but also like sawdust.  Myc will devour it so fast that it will hold its shape until it turns to dirt with beastly species like ps cyanescens, wine caps and those sort of shrooms.  Its a bit overkill, but if you're fanatical go for it.

I have no transportation.  If this were not the case and I had a truck I would do none of the above and look for freshly cleared trees with piles of sawdust, or make friends with a firewood seller or sawmill.  Sawdust is everywhere you just have to keep your eye out.

Hope this helps

Hmm… Ill keep it in mind. I'm growing Agrocybe Aegerita. And I'm not doing a huge grow, just two mycobags I think, so I don't know if it's worth buying a fat ass bag of sawdust when I have a saw and plenty of wood.
