Shit, I love all Crichton's shit. Eaters of the Dead, Pirate Latitudes, Sphere, etc. Anyhow, what do you guys think of it? I'm hooked.
HBO is on fuckin' fire lately.
Which of all these mentioned is your favorite?

now, if someone who is not ridley scott could get a ridley scott budget and faithfully adapt the culture cycle into a big screen franchise, that would be great.
^I will have to check out this Netflix show you mentioned. Thanks for mentioning it.
I also heard a while ago that they're turning Atwood's Madaddam Triology into an HBO series as well with Daren Aronofsky directing. If done right, this could be fucking EPIC. I haven't heard anything else about it in about a year though.....

ahh man that's a hard one. For literary reasons I'd have to go with Sphere, but his posthumous Pirate Latitudes is fucking awesome because pirates!

this sounds like the lamest , most idiotic premise for a show I can imagine , but all the reviews have been stellar.

I'm conflicted about this show. I feel like the direction of the show is to make me care about the droids, but why the fuck should I care about the droids? They are nothing but a program.
The rest of the show is kind of interesting, I just get bored with the droid narratives. By the way I've not read the book and I'm on episode 3.

like if you could build hyper advanced androids Cowboys has got to be the stupidest most boring thing you could ever make them into.
hey what should we do with this million dollar android ?
um... cowboy hat? yeah that would be cool! and like, a horse ?

Now that we have this space age technology we can finally make realistic... Cowboys!

Keep in mind the premise of this show was a book written well over 40 years ago.

it's just as stupid a premise 40 years ago though.
The idea of using something super high tech like androids to create something totally simple and boring like Cowboys that could easily be done with simple costumed actors is ridiculous.
if you have the tech to make realistic androids you would make aliens or dinosaurs or monsters not god damn dudes in hats.
that s like using a million dollar robot to simulate a janitor.

I agree, but it's really just a neo-western. It's a blend of the western-genre many are fond of, along with science-fiction. I love both so this show really hits the spot for me. You really have to watch it or read the book to get a better feel. In the park you can have shoot-outs and all that jazz and pretend you are in that era, killing, robbing, raping, etc. without all the ramifications.

Dismissing an idea or even show without attempting to understand either is stupid.
"Trompe-l'œil", the name of s01e07, is french for "Deceive the Eye" and applies to the show deeply. The show is really not about cowboys and indians as it is consciousness and artificial intelligence, which are both massive concepts to tackle. The setting is in the corporate world and spans multiple timelines, really, not in an unexplored western world.
If you have seen the series, it's pretty clear Westworld is a grand slam for the Sci-Fi genre, and expertly produced/filmed. I have a feeling you would like it if you shut up and watched a few episodes.

gotta disagree. The movie was good. The book was better, but this rendition really nails it for me.

like I said , all the reviews are great and I fully expect to enjoy it when I watch it. the concept is stupid , doesn't mean the show won't be great.
You really nailed the role of asshole with that post , well done !

The show is alright. Im a sucker for hbo/sho series, ive kept up with westworld but it hasnt really got me hooked or anything.
Its very dreamlike and there are a lot of things that they dont explain. Plenty of things that dont make sense or add up.
Id give it like 6.5/10

Even if you take out the two main aspects Falsereality stated, there is still a good reason why actors would not work for Westworld Park. It is only able to exist because of the technology. The show really has little to do with the concept of exploring the west though. If you don't count the recurring scenarios (which is a script that is followed almost to the letter every time) then maybe 1/6th (or less) so far has been devoted to showing the story lines the park offers.
As for the thread in general. I'm not really sure why people are having difficulty understanding what is going on or why anyone would need to rewatch it to figure it out. Seems pretty straight forward to me . The only thing I'm really in the dark about is the maze. I'd already figured out last episode's plot twist. It was subtle, but there were clues. I didn't expect him to have her killed though. That I didn't see coming.

This show hits hard and deep beyond the surface. It should 'speak' to everyone who watches it.
Sadly, it doesn't seem to nor does it resonate with everyone equally..
True Detective was similar in that many of the themes and deeper aspects went over a lot of people's heads.

Life is like that I guess. We all play(ed) our roles, parts, and are necessarily tuned towards different perceptions as a result...
