PF tek with 1.5 yr old syringes
    #23806506 - 11/06/16 12:52 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hey all! This is my first foray with growing, and I've been having a lot of fun with this hobby, it's very exciting and rewarding even though I'm not nearly done with my first flush. I bought the syringes a little over a year ago, might be pretty close to 2 years now. The delay wasn't intentional; I had some unforeseen circumstances arise which prevented me from growing right away, but decided to try them out anyway despite reading that they may no longer be viable. Much to my pleasant surprise, they've fruited!!

My chosen strain was Golden Teacher, as I read they're pretty forgiving, and I haven't had a history of success with regular gardening. I followed PF Tek, ala videos from mushroomvideos.com. Inoculation date was 9/20, and it took until 10/25 to reach 100% colonization. I didn't use an incubator, and just let the jars hang out with the foil on top. I waited until I saw pinning in the jars to birth, which took us to 10/29, and then dunked for around 30 hours. Maybe a little more because I didn't expect drilling holes into the shotgun to take so long, heh...

So with a fresh coat of verm after the dunk, they entered the shotgun on 11/03, and have plumped out quite a bit since then! I couldn't fund my mister until the next day unfortunately, so I may have overcompensating with the misting for the next 2 days, misting about 3-4 times per day, over the cakes and on the walls of the SGFC. In hindsight I probably overmisted a bit, but now I'm just fanning, and waiting until the perlite seems dry.

Today makes day 3 in the SGFC, and I see one of the smaller mushrooms' veil breaking!

Here are my questions -
Since the initial spores were so old, will the spores from the prints of these fruits be more viable than this first go? Or is this family fated to be low yeild or weak no matter what?
Is the mushroom I use to make the print still edible after printing?
Also, most of my mushrooms grew pointing to the bottom of the jar, why is this?

Thanks so much for reading and all of your help!!

Update 11/7:
Some of the cakes really exploded, here's that one I posted earlier:

I really want to make a print of this guy so I'm holding off...

There were also some weird guys that I found hiding a few minutes ago on the undersides of the cakes, I made a separate thread about them in the contams forum though. I don't know if they got funky or just look funky.:

The spores from these mushrooms will be "normal." I would argue that your grow looks fairly standard for an MS cake grow at this stage. Why do you call this grow "low yield or weak"? If there was an issue with the age of the spores used, it would most likely show up in the form of slow/not colonizing. At this stage, you've proven that the spores are plenty viable. Let the grow push out all its flushes before you judge it.

Yes, as long as it's not rotting or anything, a cap is fine to eat after printing it.

The mushrooms in the jar probably grew the way they did because of 1) seeking fresh air 2) possibly seeking light (not sure about this), or 3) it was the path of least resistance. Someone else can probably answer this better. In any case, it doesn't really matter.

Side note: your cakes look dry to me. My general rule with fruiting is, fan and ensure FAE if it's wet; mist and then fan if it's dry. And this looks dry to me. You mentioned waiting until the perlite seems dry - where did you get that idea? I haven't grown cakes in years and I don't follow the latest cake teks, but in the standard shotgun tek, the perlite shouldn't ever dry out.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate your input. I guess I just said that stuff about the spores because I tend to second guess myself or expect the worst, especially since I waited so long or whatever. But now I see how that was a silly conclusion to make.

The cakes totally do look dry in the pictures, you're right. But I picked them up and they feel pretty spongy and moist, even a little sticky? The verm itself feels a bit on the stiff side but not dry, but I'm not sure how to keep the verm damp while not oversaturating the cakes themselves.
I think I just misinterpreted some threads I read about the perlite possibly drying, but it's been damp so far with how I've been maintaining it.

Is there a reason you deleted your post? We don't do that here, so others can learn too.

I'm not even going to answer you. Just quoting in case you delete your post again. Jerkface.

well, I understand that, but it's not like we get paid to help you. So, the least you can do is leave it up so others can get the same information when they search.

I don't see any pics so I can't really make any judgements. You may very well be overthinking it. Don't mess with the cakes too much (picking them up, squeezing them, etc.) Let them do their thing, and mist as necessary. You using a SGFC?

Yes, they'll work great probably.

Depends on the state it's in.  Most likely, yes  :pacman:  :pacman:  :pacman:

They're pessimistic.  Help them see the light.

Yeah I was considering that, which was why I posted it in the first place and why I saved it after deleting it in case I changed my mind again, because I'm sure there's a lot of people who want to know what's the deal with their possibly ancient syringes. I've been kinda high strung these past few days, so sorry about that. Probably influenced my overworrying in the OP.
Yeah I'm using an SGFC.
I'll need a few minutes to reupload the pics but I can do that too.  I can update it a little bit too while I'm at it.

Thanks kinetic, your responses made me crack a smile.

Well this sucks. After picking 2 that looked strange (in the other thread), my fingers that came in contact with the fruit are very sore. They feel like I fell on them on concrete. I'm not allergic to penicillin, afaik only latex and mildly to pineapple. I'm gonna cry if I'm allergic to these guys, I really hope it's just coincidence, but... :/
