I have a few leaves that I got from another member on a trade a little bit back. I broke the veins in about 15 places on each leaf and they are growing roots at almost every break. Should I wait for them to start throwing shoots before I separate or is it safe to cut away for planting now and allow new roots at those cutting points?

I always cut the leaves in half and plant the cut end directly into soil. Usually takes ~2 months before a new shoot pops up. It makes it easier on me because the leave will curl and dry out up top long before the soil does, so i have time to notice before the soil dries out.
As for your question, just be careful and try not to disturb the roots to much (as you would when transplanting any plant) and you should have no problems getting those planted.

Nice. I've been growing these in a jar of water with indirect sunlight. It is time to put them in some good soil. I'm going to give it a whirl on cutting them apart.
The leaves still look very healthy without signs of drying out, but that's most likely because there is only an inch above the waters surface and I keep the top covered with an occasional lift for fresh air. Some of the roots are only little stubs, but a few of them are about 4cm long and are in groups.

Sorry to hijack, but is it normal for the exposed part of the leaf to turn brown before I see new shoots?

They will enjoy the soil. Just make sure to keep some of the leaf exposed for photosynthesis.

If its brown all the way to the roots then sorry but its dead
If there's any green left then give it a chance it still might produce shoots.
