Tryptic Soy Agar Pre-poured Petri Dishes

I am curious if pre-poured petri dishes are a reliable and consistent way to do agar. Is there anything I should watch out for or do to the dishes to make them effective? I plan on doing this with PE, B+,ECU, and BUR; but mainly I plan on doing it with PE once I get familiar with agar.

Buying them is costly but reliable as any other pre made lab stuff.

well, to grow all that, you're probably going to go through anywhere from 20-30 plates (very conservatively, assuming 1-2 grows of each), or as many as 150 or more. So, cost could be an issue at some point. You'll need a way to keep cultures going, like master slants and such.
So, I really suggest you start trying to pour some plates, or getting into pre-pour agar. Do you have an SAB and everything? Did you mean tryptic like plates with three divisions? Those don't give as much room for growth, but I can see the advantages. I prefer letting the myc grow a bit more than that though.

Wow thanks for the speedy replies. Thanks for the link mofo. Dan I am in the process of a buying the equipment I am going to do a flow hood instead, is a SAB better? I am wanting to get stuff to simplify things at the beginning of the learning process so i don't have to many variables for error.

Nothing wrong with SAB's, certainly not better though.
If you're just learning I wouldn't be sinking money into a flowhood. I'm still debating whether I want/need one years into it.

I just whipped up my hood, and I miss my sab, so simple. With a hood you got to be more clean it seems(iso gloves at least). I just whipped up some p plates and I plan to use my sab again soon.

I will do a coin toss on my next paycheck to see if I make a SAB or flowhood. My flow hood idea would have a 2'x2'x3' plexiglass front with 32 cfm of squirrel fans on a 8.8"x8.8" hepa filter for 120$ total of supplies.

You'd better just make a sab.

Never leave a life's decision to a dirty coin toss. The flow hood idea you got is wrong.

That tends to be how I live is by a coin toss, quite literally. How far in the wrong is my flow hood idea?

lol, ok now I see. That is about 50-60$ more onto that price I had stated above. I just figured if it was more than 2x the displacement of the room of the hood it would be good but I'm wrong.

Yeah man just use a SAB. I say this a lot but I've only had 3 contams in the 300+ plates I've poured in my SAB. (That's before using the plates, all three were single bacteria colonies.)
Long ago in the dark ages I bought a pack of pre-poured dishes and half of them came either broken or contamed.
