Help A Noob Out: Can you ID these Mushrooms?
    #23801649 - 11/04/16 07:39 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hello all!

First off, thank you much for taking the time to read my FIRST post on Shrommery. I'm completely new to the game, but have been lurking periodically for some time and finally found a reason to join y'all when I discovered the most dense growth of shrooms I've ever seen (I said I was new to this!) on my compost pile. I was hoping with all of the great wisdom here on the boards that I could get an identification of my mushrooms. I am inexperienced in taking prints and, therefore, have none to show, although if this is inconclusive I suppose I may have to take the plunge and give it a go!

Habitat:
This thriving mycological colony has emerged from my compost pile (consisting heavily  of mixed wood chips) this year.

Gills:
The gills have a light brown/tan color and are attached to the stem.

Stem:
>2.5", slender, tan in color, and hollowish?

Cap:
Diameter of cap between 1/2" and 1 1/2", light brown/tan in color, conical, convex.

Note: I did not notice any blueish bruising...but my eyes are very untrained in this respect!

It is a Conocybe species.

Yea, I don't see Conocybes in large troops like that too often.

Nice first post by the way OP, always helps when ID requests are done properly.

Good to know, thank you! Any speculation as to if it is one of the Conocybe that are...edible?

It's not a species you want to eat, possibly toxic.

Damn, I figured such! I've been appreciating seeing them there nonetheless, but that would have been a bonus! Thank you Ran-D!

If you really wanted to put a species name on it, Conocybe tenera would probably be a good fit.
