couldn't find anything about this, only about "brf agar substitute"... can i use brown rice flour with agar? i also have regular sugar if that helps. i see no reason it wouldn't work but i just need a confirmation. not really looking to half-ass it, just wondering can i use BRF as nutrients in agar? thanks in advance.

BRF isn't a supplement for agar, but a replacement.
Edit: crappy link
Anyway, either do brf plates or do regular pasty plates. Trying to get extra nutrition by adding brf is just asking for more possible issues as agar is meant to be an isolating medium, not the bulk of your nutrition. Stick to what works.

what "extra nutrition"? just regular nutrition, please. if grain water agar works too why wouldn't brf? is it hard to get dissolved in water or what? and if it's TOO nutritious, couldn't you just use less? i i don't mean to doubt you and be an asshole while doing that. i just realized i also have some leftover birdseed so i hope this wasn't a huge waste of time for everyone involved. i just also have a huge pack of brown rice flour just laying around...

Wait, why does having birdseed change everything?

yes it works. the brf agar sub recipe uses a lot of brf so you dont "need" the agar as a gelling agent, but its a pasty mess that's hard to get nice wedges from.

what kind of ratio should i be working with? i'm just doing 2 plates at the moment, might try doing one with brf + agar and one with a little bit of grain water + agar... i'm saving the 2 other plates for transfers. i have a 50g pack of agar, that should make a few plates right?

2 plates? why? I'd use maybe 1-2% brf by volume, so 1-2g brf pr 100mL water. ca 2% agar too, so 2g agar pr 100mL water in addition to the brf.
50g agar should give you over 100 plates easily.

thanks! i had the ~2g/2g ratio bouncing around my head but wasn't sure about the flour. i only have 4 plates at the moment so i'm going to try and get some clean mycelium out of my spore syringe and use the 2-3 other plates to isolate. getting sick and tired of these goddamn bacterial jars!

not isolate, clean up growth.
Cant you buy some zip lock containers or find some small jelly/sauce/whatever glass jars? any small container that can withstand PC temps works.
I usually inoculate 2-3 plates with spores for each variety/specie I wanna grow, then take transfers from the best looking one and go from there.

yeah, clean up. that's what i meant, sorry. i have two small pp5 containers and two 250ml glass jars with tyvek + silicone injection port lids. i'm in a pinch, if you can call it that. just looking to get some clean growth and maybe make some LI out of that so i can finally stop screwing around with these grain jars...

dont mind the SHIPs, just crack the lid open in the SAB, you're gonna have to do that to transfer agar wedges -> agar anyway.
if you struggle to get clean growth I wouldn't bother with LI just yet. streak as few spores as possible onto a plate, transfer as soon as you see some healthy growth and hope for the best then.

recipe used was 100ml water/2g agar powder/1,5g brf and a couple drops of green food coloring which had preservatives in it. (sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate) i wonder if the preservatives will fuck this up? injected through the port with a spore syringe i made myself from a fresh print some weeks ago. other one got 1 drop and the other 2-3 drops. i guess all i can do now is wait... in the meanwhile, i did two pp5 containers with just tyvek. this time i used 1,5g agar and 1g brf per 100ml, no food coloring this time.
not much of an update, i'll post when i get some growth going...
