G. junonius/spectabilis help with starting an outdoor 'cloned'/slurry grow?..
    #23799765 - 11/04/16 05:14 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hi folks - I have a bit of a handle on how to do this, but I am a total neophyte to growing. I have a wild patch of active G. junonius growing on a pair of dead pear stumps, and using the basic tek below I'd like to build and inoculate an outdoor 'bed'using a fresh sample from those logs:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7486096#7486096

I have pear wood shavings and chunks to get the ball rolling, and I know this fungus is a powerful coloniser that tends to outgrow contams once it's taken hold of the wood.

I'm about ready to start soaking the wood, and would just like a little clarification regarding the strength of bleach water - from what I've noted the amount of sodium hypochlorite varies between brands from as little as 2 or 3 % up to 10% or so, so making a '10% bleach solution' as per many instructions here, could land me with varying concentrations of final soaking water.

I do have here some Milton fluid at 2% sodium hypochlorite - at this strength how much would I need per litre of water to achieve the right level of disinfection?

The other questions I had - do I need to keep the substrate sealed during colonisation and totally in the dark, or does it need to be open top ventilation, or regularly air-exchanged 'manually'?

Also when it comes to fruiting, am I oK to just bury the colonised substrate with some more soaked (pear) wood logs, soil all round and over? - I hear a lot of sp. need a dirt casing to properly form fruits?..

I hope no one thinks I've just turned up and lazily fired off a string of questions here - I've been researching here and elsewhere for some time, and the above are areas I still need clarification on - as a newbie it's especially hard to pull all the info together at once from so many sources.

TIA for any help, especially from those with prior Gymnopilus ssp. experience.

Cheers, and be well! ',;~}~

Thanks Stevo, not sure how this is going to go now as the suddenly much cooler weather is stopping the new primordia from pinning properly, and the existing pins from forming fruits - there were 2 almost ready to be harvestable, but one took a hit from the frost and started to rot off. The remaining one may or may not survive, but if all else fails I'll just scrape together what bits of pins/primordia/mycelium I can together from the stumps and have a bash at it. If it doesn't work there's always next year!

Anyway please can anyone help me with the questions I posted esp. regarding air exchange, bleach water concentrations, and dark/lighting regime? If this goes off it could need to be in the next day or two and whilst I'm doing more reading I'm still not finding quite wat I need!..

Cheers folks ',;~}~

Heh... well yesterday I took a stab at this, but in my neophyte nervousness, bits of the tek kept flying sneakily from my head...

End result is, I think the media was left too wet, and possibly with still too much active chlorine in it - wasn't until I was mixing the slurry in I realised I could still smell it!

It wasn't from overdoing it strength wise either - I used 1L of 2% sod.hyp. to ~10L of water, and left it 24 hours. Where I believe I went wrong was in not giving it near enough time to drain and air out afterwards.

Anyway it's sat loosely covered in the dark at around 18-20 C, will just have to see if it starts colonising or not I suppose!

Cheers!

Heck if this doesn't work I'll try a more thought out approach next year and maybe give agar a shot - I only found these mushrooms over here this year and hadn't had time to a) decide to try and clone-off a grow from it, b) figure out what I needed to have and know in time to be able to harvest some and give it a shot, and now after a fashion I suppose I have.

Taken in lots of info in the interim but it's hard to have it all come together, and retain practical structure without the context of experience.

Anyway I have 2 other tubs put together, working with some naturally colonised substrate and chunks of soaked pear wood from the location itself.

One of these tubs is going to have its contents put in a hole in the ground soon, the second to follow later where they can fend for themselves.

The tub I put together with the slurry I'll keep an eye on indoors at around 18-20C to see if it colonises before deciding what to do with it. If it doesn't take I'll dump it out as food for the other 2 lots I'll have already 'released'.

I heard this tek worked great for this sp, and I know it's a highly competitive and vigorous coloniser so I stand a chance of seeing some progress from one of the experiments. At worst it made me get off my arse and have a go ',;~}~

Cheers!
