A question regarding the aeration of substrate materials in PF tek
    #23799231 - 11/03/16 09:58 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

So in the Magic Mushroom Growers Guide by the McKenna brothers they state that the aeration of the substrate materials is an important part of healthy mycelium growth, "firmly tighten the lid and vigorously shake the jar to break up the mycelium and redistribute the inoculum throughout the rye". Paraphrasing, but something like that.

I can't help but notice in the standard PF Tek that this wouldn't occur, obviously the medium is slightly different, rye as opposed to verm, but I wanted to get some opinions from others about the subject.

Is aeration/disturbance of the substrate important or beneficial to the growth of mycelium?

in standard pf teks, you drill holes and stuff with tyvek, polyfill, SFD for gas exchange... and its more than enough for the mycelium to thrive...

however, every once in a while, also if the
colonization is slow or you wanna hasten the colonization, a good shake wont hurt...

shaking is also useful if you wanna check if you have a healthy myc (if they bounce back to life after shaking)..

anyway, that book is very outdated.
hang out in here and youll get better up-to-date info.

Yeah I've drilled the holes, had a few successful grows so far, theres just so much information to get through

I figured that book was a bit outdated, I've had it for years but figure I'd start with the OG haha

Grains and agar you should have a lid filter. Pf tek it's just redundant with the verm layer.

Right, so if I move away from using verm I should be implementing some kind of lid filter like polyfill. Got it
