Golden Teachers / Syringe / Rye grain grow kit log

Hello all,
New to posting on Shroomery but long time reader.
I've recently ventured in to cultivation after having a little haul out in the wild (South UK)

So I purchased a syringe of Golden Teachers and a bog standard Rye Grain grow bag. The bag populated nicely and within a few weeks of gentle mixing, shaking and incubation at 26 degrees in the dark resulted in a fully populated bag.

5 days later

So following instruction I did a final mix of the substrate and whacked the vermiculite casing on top. Then letting it stand back in incubator in darkness for 4 days.
Today I went to expose the cake to air, daylight and turn the temp down to 23 degrees. However, I notice that the mycelium has not come back to its full whiteness and none of the casing has been populated except for a small area of white 'fluff'.
   What are peoples views?
Going forward I am going to mist the incubator daily trying to maintain a humidity above 80%.
Any advise, welcomes, hints and tips welcome. I shall be reporting back to this thread with this grows updates.
Cheers, Sprint

My view is that it's weak to fruit directly from a kit bag wrapped in foil sitting in an incubator. Given the materials you have, I would personally have spawned the contents of that bag to a small monotub, such as a small bucket or 2 liter soda bottle. I also think you probably would have greater yield from one syringe if you'd have done 6-10 BRF tek jars instead.
But you're probably going to be fine doing what you're doing and it looks good so far. Good luck!

The grain bag looks too wet IMO. I wish you good luck but the grain wasn't fully colonized. That's a breeding ground for contaminations. I don't want to make you bad feelings.
Don't buy grow kits or something like that in the future. Take some time to read some guides in this community. It is cheaper and you will have better results. Try to raise the humidity into the 90s.

Thanks for your replies.
I agree, after reading here and other sources I'm not moving away from grow bags and the like. Need to get me a pressure cooker!
I used half of the 10ml syringe in this bag and have half for a future grow. I was hoping that this cake would fruit and I can then take a spore print etc etc.
@Freespeech I'll have a look at monotubs and have previously ordered some BRF for some jars as I think that'll be the best method going forward. Will initially be sterlising jars in boiling water for 90 mins.
@enlightenment, the only added moisture to the bag was from the casing material which needed a mug of boiling water added to it before cooling down and sprinkling on top. I'll have to look in to better casing methods with the future jars.
Will report back if anything changes

So 3 days later and the cake is looking much whiter.

The white fuzz is continueing to grow on top. Is this normal?

Is this where the pins should form?

Damn man, that first picture above looks soaked! It's obviously too late to put into a monotub, but I'm wondering if you should make a small SGFC, line it with hydrated perlite, take the bag or wrapper off your cake, and fruit it as a cake.

Yeah, this grow is pretty ugly in more ways than one. It doesn't look great but something is growing, so fingers crossed that it fruits well. At this point just wait it out and see what happens. As I mentioned above, I'd go with a more standard growing technique next time, especially if this doesn't give you the results you're hoping for.

3 days later and it seems the white fluffy growth is taking over the casing material on top

Do you think it would be beneficial to make a SGFC? Seems quite a simple concept. Does the chamber get heated in any way?
Dunk n roll the whole cake?
I did a pasteurisation process on some Rye Grain and placed 2 tea spoons of this cakes mycelium in to it as a g2g experiment and its actually taken off and doubled in size!
What should happen with this cake if it is to follow normal process and fruit? Pinning straight out of the 'fluff'?
Again your wisdom and help is appreciated.
Ta.

Decided to cut her out of the bag and dunk her tonite ready for a roll tomorrow and in to a SGFC I'm building now.
If she doesn't fruit atleast Ive got a fruiting chamber for futures

Dunked the cake for 24 hours and constructed a simple SGFC. Rolled in verm and will see where we go from here

A week later with the SGFC being kept at around 21 degrees and 80%+ humidity and I think we have some knotting going on!

That was some way to get there! Clone and make your own rye spawn from the fruits.
Also the incubating in darkness is not needed.

9 days on and we are getting no where.
Photos taken just after misting:

Fruting chamber held between 19 and 21 degs, regular misting. White 'knots' just seem to have stalled.
Any thoughts anyone?

Why must people use grow kits? Its the laziest thing you can possibly do to have a harvest of mushies. You can easily get all the supplies from local stores or amazon for cheaper. Grow kits are for people who want a short cut or the easy way out.
My 2 cents

It looks fine to me... You want glistening with no pooling water, and there's no pooling water, just a glisten on the surface. I generally mist til it's around that level of hydration as well. At least the OP is using a sgfc for his kit.
Those puff balls aren't knots. They're bacteria blobs, nothing you can really do about them. I'd just keep on doing what you're doing. Pins should eventually come.

4 days later and the cake is getting interesting PINS!

Should I be changing my spray regime at all or just carry on as I am until harvest?
Thanks for your advise and help through my first grow guys. Appreciate it and learnt alot. Now have 2 x grain jars populating to follow this cake.

It's safe to mist pins. Keep letting the mist evaporate and your fine.

9 days later ladies and Gents and they are properly getting big.
Some of the caps seem to have the edges folding upwards similar to a typical Chanterelle mushroom. Is this normal? They all seem to already have their gills open with no veil to break so I am not sure when to be harvesting. Just letting them go for now.

Now would be a good time to harvest for a good number of those. Once you can see the gills, that's usually a pretty good sign that they're done producing actives and can be harvested. Letting them go a little longer won't hurt anything if you'd rather let all of them mature and harvest at once, or you can harvest the ones that are clearly ready now and give the younger ones a little extra time. It's up to you.
Nice job turning that kit around!

Either i've never grown GT's or those arent GT's. The pic could cause the darkenss though.
How dark are those caps really? Gj on the grow!

I have been wondering whether I actually have GTs as well.
They all seem relatively small, caps dont look as if they have a veil that breaks. just develop in to open caps and then as they get older the caps tend to curl upwards.
I harvested quite a few from it yesterday and they bruise blue...

I was putting their weird shape and colour down to not having optimal grow conditions? Yet when I google Golden Teachers the image results look nothing like them!

Any ideas on what these may be?
I've pruned off the rest of the shrooms and am dunking the culture in cold water hoping to get another flush.
I got some fairly good spore prints so will be donating some to the Free Spore Ring Earth as well as making up a syringe to populate some rye berries i'm sterilising, maybe in a more monotub approach

I have a pretty nice tub of GTS cranking right now...maybe a day or two away from harvest...
I think it's a great variety...I can say they have proven to be more aggressive then my PE6...which is a myco machine lol
