Metrics of Spent Grain Spawn
    #23796979 - 11/03/16 08:56 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Hello!

I'm new at mushroom cultivation and I am currently gathering all the necessary information in order to produce my own spawn to grow Oysters at home. I intend to do so by using spent grains (from beer brewing) as substrate for the mycelium to expand. The inoculation will be done by liquid-inoculation technique.

I have designed the steps to follow to produce three generations of spawn, and I have encountered some doubts regarding the measures and proportions for a correct mycelium colonization and expansion. It would be great if you could review the calculations and tell me whether I’m on the right track or I’ve gone wrong at some point!

Here it is:

GENERATION 1

One 2-litre (0,44 gallons) glass jar, filled with 0,6 kg (1,32 lbs) of spent grain inoculated with 40ml (1,4 ounces) of myceliated broth.

GENERATION 2

Five 4-litre (0,88 gallons) glass jar, filled with 1,2 kg (2,64 lbs) of spent grain + 0,12 kg (0,26 Ibs) spawn from GEN1.

GENERATION 3

25 6-litre (1,32 gallons) glass jar, filled with 2,4 kg (5,29 lbs) of spent grain + 0,264 kg (0,58 Ibs) spawn from GEN2.

FRUITING

Some more doubts show up when it comes to the fruiting stage. I would like to use 0,38-litre (0,18 gallons) jam jars in order to recycle this resource.
  • Is it a good container?
  • Would it be better to put it horizontally in order to favour oyster mushroom growth? (see picture)
  • As a bulk substrate, could I use cardboard?
  • Would I need some extra-nutrient substrate like coffee grounds?
  • What ratio spawn/bulk/supplement would you use?

Thanks a lot for the advice! I hope to be able to post some pics of the results as soon as I figure everything out

Spent brewers grains will have all different moisture content depending on how long it sat before they grain out or other factors. Also the nutrition and residual sugars will be different all the time.

I would use it as a supplement but spent brewers grains are much better suited for livestock feed. I make beer for a living and still don't try to use that shit for mushroom anymore

Also you're posting in the psychedelic mushrooms forum there's one for edibles

As a big good beer fan, would you be willing to send/sell me some of your beer? I'm very curious.
