Giant wood eater -- ID request please
    #23797233 - 11/03/16 11:08 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hello gang, found these big fellas last night and despite how common they appear, I'm not finding a good match with my own research.  Other than the cap color most everything seems to fit Gymnopilus (wood habitat, size, thick bulging/tapering stipe, gill attachment & veil) but I'm not seeing very many pale Gyms in a search.  Would appreciate some assistance on this id, thanks in advance!

fyi: the 2 caps in the middle were already somewhat dry (found on the ground nearby), the others including the 2 pins are fresh.

Habitat:
North-east US...Found on cut sections of tree trunks in a a large log pile

Gills:
closely spaced, medium brown color, remnants of a partial veil present on all specimens

Stem:
Unusually thick and stout, most are bulging in the middle and taper at the base.

Cap:
Cream colored turning yellow as they dry. Dry surface, rather plain and unremarkable except that these are extremely large.  The large cap pictured is 9"+ diameter and weighs almost a pound.

Spore print color:
medium brown, see picture

Bruising:
none

Thanks for the quick response ...I'm not sure if Hemopholiota is a match though, most if not all pictures I'm finding show a rather shaggy quality to the cap and stipe and none of these specimens have any shagginess whatsoever, including the young pins ...thoughts?

Aha, you're right, unless I put them there.

:gangsta2:

I thought it looked right, couldn't clearly see they were attached.

Fine.
