Brown rice tek

Hi guys, I am thinking of growing some golden teachers (cubes) from spore prints however I am not able to get any vermiculite because of remote position. I was wondering if I was to boil some brown rice, rinse, place in jars, sterilize and then inoculate would this work? Adding only brown rice. Seeing as verm is only used to absorb water I thought that the brown rice would have the same effect while producing nutrients? I also have brown rice flour which I could add to the brown rice. Thanks guys!!

Dude just order some verm. It's so cheap. You already made a thread about this basically and if this is your first time you should definitely follow a tek. And verm doesn't just absorb water by the way.

How do you get food? No one you know can order some for you?
Vermiculite is super important
Even if you used grains you need it for spawn mixtures/casings.

Has internet but no mail? Spores are harder to get than verm if you live somewhere with no mail.

All I want to know is if it is possible to do it this way, I cannot get vermiculite in the near future and want to grow some before but if it isn't possible i will wait.

Unless im at you're house with you it's pretty hard to tell you what to do. There's an abundance of info and resources so you may figure out what you can do with what you have.
Vermiculite is useful but its not like cubensis will just not grow period if you don't use it..

I did WHOLE BROWN RICE ONLY years ago. It can be done but has its drawbacks. More importantly is do you intend to do it as cakes? Rice will produce a lot of starch and be sticky, making it hard to crumble for trays. IF you attempt it, which I do not recommend from my personal experiences, you will want to boil 2-3x the amount of water that you have for grain. Dump it on the rice and let it soak for 24 hours. I at this point rinse it in cool water. Then add fresh and bring the water to low boil. CONSTANTLY scooping out a grain or 2 and pinching it between fingers. DO NOT OVER COOK AND EXPLODE YOUR RICE, IT TURNS INTO AN UNUSABLE PASTE. AS SOON AS YOU CAN SMASH WITH VERY LITTLE DRY GRAIN IN MIDDLE, dump into your strainer and rinse repeatedly with cold water. I use a piece of screen in the bottom on my sink and rinse like 20 times. More rinse is better! Then let it set and drip dry for a while. I do 30 min but I also add vermiculite to mine to pull excess water off outside, and then hydrate the vermiculite a little. For you I would say go an hour or 2 to let outside dry so not sticky. I say make a trip and get some vermiculite but it can be done as I did it.

Yes you can use brown rice to make spawn If that is your intention... Or you could use it to fruit off of but I tried white rice and the potency was awful.. brown rice would probably be a little stronger. I would just add the spawn made from brown rice to pasteurized horse dung. many people do if fact use white or brown rice making spawn.

Thanks! Does it have to be pasteurized?

I would...simply avoid this statement. You certainly can use it as spawn though but that potency thing just ignore

Brown rice will work as an agar replacement in a pinch, and it will also let you fruit mushroom on in.
I PC it...but the PF Tek with BRF doesn't require it. I'd SWAG that the smaller grain size in BRF let's you steam it as opposed to having to PC the full size grains. But that's just a SWAG.

i don't know if it would work the same for cubensis but i've been using WBR(whole brown rice) as spawn for my panaeolus mycelium and it seems to love it. and the prep couldn't be easier. i use short grain rice which i fully immerse in boiling water for 15 minutes. kind of like how you would cook pasta. the extra water helps to draw off the starch. then let it drain for like 15-20 minutes. then i sprinkle it into PP5 containers one tablespoon full at a time kind of loosely so that the grains stay separated. you want there to be some slight spaces between the grains so that the mycelium will have some open pathways to network through. as a result you should have no need to shake the jars during colonization. then i just pressure cook them for one hour and they're ready to go. a 6-8 hour steam sterilization could even work too but i can not say for certain. i'm still refining this tek so it may require adjustments but it's something to take note of if you're considering using WBR. but be aware that colonized brown rice will need to be used as spawn which will be added to a bulk substrate, it will not be optimal for fruiting from it directly like a BRF cake would be.
