I'm joining because I'd like to live a more disciplined and structured life. I also seek steady income and meaningful work with good lateral potential. Not to mention the plethora of other benefits.
You know who lives the most disciplined and structured lives? Slaves. You should just be my slave I pay trash under the table.

Why do you seem to have such a problem with the military? It's not slavery if you're paid and are joining on your own free will.

I'm a shill for Castro. It's not the military specifically I have a problem with as much as war for profit.

So we are supposed to fight for free? Our military would be utter garbage if we didn't pay our soldiers.

No we are supposed to fight for freedom, but the US military does no such thing if you ask me.

Well, I agree. I'm in it to protect, i'm not in it to kill (though yes if told to I would).I hope I can work on defense systems like missile interceptors and such.

I mean I think our military doesn't just kill, it overkills, and superior technology is what enables us to do that.
I have the upmost respect for soldiers but to me being a soldier comes with honor and integrity, and I don't feel like those things are compatible with the US military. If you're doing it for money you're not a soldier you're a merc.

Why do you respect someone just for being a soldier? A lot of soldiers are scum bags Why does being a soldier have anything to do with honor or integrity?
I'm all for someone joining the military, using it to improve their life, defending the country and what not, but that's never been the whole picture. That's all on the individual (though you can't choose what war you fight in)

Scumbags make the world go round man. It is a fine line between righteousness and scum, and the ones in the trenches set those lines by sheer will and guts, or at least they used to. These days it is about banging out code and fondling joysticks, but I'm just saying that war made men what they are and I respect that.

It's not what most people imagine it is. I've seen many people request to get out and they haven't been hindered at all. The military largely doesn't want people with 0 motivation to be there right now.
It gets more crazy as you go infantry and further on into special ops and specialized areas of course, but the people who join those areas are very much into it 9.9 times out if 10 - and the discipline needed to be effective in those areas is necessary.
There are some great documentaries on the USs switch from the draft to an all volunteer Army. Pretty interesting. It became much more efficient as a result. A good argument against the draft really, most top generals seem to agree as well.
The modern military in the US is a far cry from slavery. Slavery and armies can go hand in hand, but then so can farming and house keeping.

Even having to request to get out of something reeks of slavery to me, but I am a freeman I wouldn't understand. I want my country to have a military but military domininance is not where it's at AFAIAC.
You know what I do when someone asks me to do something I don't want? Throw up my favorite finger and walk away. You know who comes after me? Nobody. That is freedom AFAIAC.

A smaller, more motivated military makes sense to me
The same principle would apply to any situation, and ime having 2 motivated coworkers is better than 3 unmotivated coworkers.

oh god. I've been working from home all week on account of a transit strike(even though I'm five blocks away from my place of work...no one's in the office) and I can't do it anymore. First day it was awesome, but man I feel like such a bum. I've been in my pajamas until like 5 pm all week and tomorrow I have a super fancy all day networking luncheon thing where I have to dress up. This is gonna be a hard transition tomorrow morning for me.

I hate doing that. Going from full on bumming to well-groomed socialite is painful. Its like going from a hot shower to a cold bedroom in the winter. Brrrrrrr.

I was talking to a dude at work that came over from the Army finance department and it was a very interesting discussion.
Apparently they're still using floppy disks in that department (a subsect of internal IT ops from what I understand) and they "get deployed" to vacation spots. Be a nerd with a stiff back and you win.
I mean other than their financial IT being horribly managed.

we still use floppies in some of our machines. Atleast they're the 3.5" or w/e ones not the floppy floppy discs.
