Ashcroft to punish people for pedophilia tourism. Good? Bad?

I just heard on "Tough Crowd" with Colin Quinn that John Ashcroft wants to punish US citizens who go to other countries to have sex with children. Like most laws the government passes, this sounds good on the surface.
Think of where this could lead. This could be the start of the government trying to end drug tourism. They could start arresting people for going to Amsterdam to smoke weed.
Is it possible to let the US government arrest people for having sex with kids in other countries without letting them arrest people for taking drugs in other countries?

1. It is a horrid idea no matter how it is presented and no matter your feelings on the issue as you already know full well where this will lead.
2. Why assume that we are the ultimate in morality and that other countries are depraved heathens? Do we believe that other nations are incapable of protecting their children or do they merely define right of consent at a different age than the USA?

I'll bet that there must be some kind of kiddie trade in other countries. I wouldn't put anything past some countries. I would love it if we could catch the perverts who go to other countries to fuck kids, but yep.........Ashcroft will eventually fuck with drug and adult sex tourists maybe.
Fortunately, Ashcroft will be out of power next January.

i think this brings up an interesting debate. should US laws protect foreigners outside the US?
for example: should there be embargoes against countries permitting slave labor?
let's say you choose to visit some strife-infested part of africa where there is no rule of law. if you go there and kill a foreigner, should you be held accountable by US authorities?

If done preoperly I think it may be good. Why would you let shitbags like that back in your country when they go off to do that stuff?(and dont compare this to drug use, that's rediculous, last thing drug users need is to be compared with Pedophiles). "Have fun in Thailand Jim? You got your child fuck fix for the year right?"

14 year olds are legal in some parts of Canada.
Do you consider a 30 year old fucking a 14 year old to be pedophilia?

I consider that statutory rape. How bout somebody who hasn't reached puberty yet?
Also, arent these crimes in the country they are visiting as well? Just rarely enforced.

I'm not comparing pedophila to drug use. I'm saying that Ashcroft probably does and that it's a possiblity that he might start fucking with people who go to Amsterdam to get high and have sex with adult prostitutes.
Who knows what Ashcroft would do? He'd execute drug user if he could, i'm sure.

then there's the whole thing with proof, if they just consider anyone going to A'dam a druggie, and anyone going too [insert country here] a pedo, then we're fucked. I'm not sure I like the idea of the laws of this country over-ruling the laws of other countries (of course this already ahppens to an extent). Morals or not, the idea is fucked.

Regardless of what your feelings are about pedophilia, it's bullshit to try to enforce U.S. laws on people when they're outside of their country. You should be allowed to travel wherever you want and do whatever the laws there allow you to do. I also agree with Swami's point about how we should get our heads out of asses and stop assuming that our values are always right for everyone.

Why not? We already buy things made from sweatshop labor. Slave labor is just a step down from that. Just because something may be immoral doesn't mean it should be illegal.

If it's something allowed in the U.S., then yes.

Seeing as you can buy them in any store in the US what difference does it make if you buy them abroad? Last Nike advert I saw said "The most offensive boots we've ever made. 100% slave labour"

Their is a difference between pedo-tourism (new word, like narco-terrorism) and narco-tourism. In countries where people go to have sex with children, such as Costa Rica and Thailand, the pedophilic sex is still illegal. In the countries where people go to do drugs, the drugs are legal. Of course, this won?t matter to Ashcroft. I don?t see how we can penalize someone for breaking another countries laws, nor how we can prove that the point of such a trip is child-sex.
