Got to play on the Occulus Rift

They had a kiosk at the Microsoft store at the mall. I waited a few minutes for a man to end his trial play, and then a nice girl offered me to try it. I sat in a chair and I signed a waiver. She put a large helmet thing on my head and started up the system. For about 5 seconds, I was placed in a virtual living room, with a fireplace, couches, rugs, etc. I looked around in awe.
Then the game started.. Minecraft. I had never played before. At first I was very very nauseous. After about ten-fifteen seconds, my stomach had calmed down. I started to play using the controller in my hand. My first impression was that it was like sitting very very close to a huge movie screen. For a few minutes I walked around in the cartoony pixelated world climbing hills and mountains and killing goats and cows.
Then, I decided to do something crazy. I turned my head 180 degrees, and to my amazement, the world followed my vision. I turned my head the other way and there was more virtual world there. I moved my head all around and I WAS SURROUNDED BY THIS VIRTUAL WORLD. It was very impressive and very cool.
I played for about 7 minutes. When I took the helmet off I was very disoriented. The real world was so stable and still. I imagine that if I had been playing 30 minutes to an hour, it would be a very weird thing to come back to the real world.
I wonder what kind of side effects are going to appear from the younger generation growing up in virtual reality, augmented reality.. who knows. It will be fascinating.
Well, just wanted to share.
Anyone else get to try it? What were your impressions, thoughts?

Sounds scary. I hope they don't make these a thing, I wouldn't wanna zone out on a VR game for 5 hours or more, I would feel subhuman.
Glad you got to experience it though, crazy they made you sign a waiver, they must still be hella expensive. Minecraft is a game I dwelled in, so I probably woulda owned the VR world.

It's definitely going to be a thing. They are already sold in some places. I think it will be a fun activity, maybe not so great for the youth.. especially with VR porn, super-immersive simulations, etc.

Why wouldn't it be great for youth?
They have the soft and mushy brains that can still modify themselves into something that can reliably accommodate such disorientation. I imagine that every generation up to and probably including millennials will end up with horrible side effects (nausea, disorientation, etc.) as a result, just because our brains aren't used to functioning that way and are too old to learn new tricks. I don't think VR tech will be any less harmless than D&D, Marilyn Manson, or GTA has proven to be.
Also, while I'm sure virtually (heh) every person you ask will deny looking forward to VR porn, I'm absolutely certain everyone that buys a VR headset will be spending some extensive time with just one hand on the keyboard.

Played with a HTC vive, tried job simulator as well as this aquarium demo where I was on a sunken ship with fish floating around me. I'd flinch when they came near. I walked to the railings of the ship and there's glowing yellow lines, like on the holodeck in TNG. It was amazing but couldn't wear glasses with it, my frames are too large.

Have had an Oculus DK2 for a while now. VR is a really interesting experience -- am actually fond of the different ways it impacts different genres.
First person oriented games feel really immersive and realistic, but top-down and third person adventure games have this really compelling ability to feel almost like playing with tabletop figurines.
Am not sure how it will impact the younger generation -- there is certainly a sense of wonder the first time having new experiences, but growing accustomed to it makes it more of just another way to consume media. Has its own pros and cons.
But that is just with consideration for the gaming front; Facebook bought out Oculus with the intention of using VR primarily under a sentiment of it being the future of Social Media. That is where the impact could have more significant implications than just the gaming industry -- it's one thing to have another form of entertainment, but if VR truly starts to change the way people communicate with each other then it would really be part of a generational shift.
John Carmack at the Oculus Connect keynote speeches this year made a really interesting commentary about where he envisions VR going -- the sentiment was that VR needs to stop being just a series of interesting experiences and become more like cell phones, where it is considered stupid not to have one.
Personally have a VR helmet and no cell phone, so clearly i r teh dumb.
