EDIT: actually i'm not sure what i was thinking- the gills are clearly very very wrong for chroogomphus.

There's a picture of #4 in the book mushrooms of the pacific Northwest. I had remembered seeing it right next to the section on psilocybe, too bad those arent active too.

Those are Cortinarius, Psilocybes have purple gills, white stems and turn bluish black when handled. Look in dune grasses.

I just realized I identified the chroogomphus, put the wrong photo in my post, then looked at it and couldn't figure out what I was thinking calling it a chroogomphus. No more identifying for me when I'm sleep deprived

I'm sorry if my posts are frustrating you... I'm just failing at this pretty badly...
Monday I drove out to the coast and came back with nothing but a backpack full of LBM... So I skipped work yesterday and now I'm fully stocked on Cortinarius...
It is what it is, as long as I can learn what I need to be doing...
I'm confused about why I'm not finding anything, I'm definitely looking in the right spots... (far north OR coast, in the dunes a few hundred yards fromt he surf) I feel like I probably need to look less under big trees in the dunes and more out in the open...
When you first discover a mushroom that could be either a Cortinarius or psilocybe and they look similar what's the first thing i should do?
Try to bruise the stem? Look at the color of the gills? If I'm checking the gills, Cortinarius has brown gills as well, am I looking for darker shade of brown or can it be similar?
Thank you everyone for all of you help and patience

The mushrooms you are looking for will likely already have some blue on them - and the gills in mature ones will be dark purple brown, a much different shade than the rusty orange brown of Cortinarius.
Also Cortinarius are mycorrhizal with trees, so that's where you find them. Psilocybes are not mycorrhizal, and don't care about the trees.

Psilocybes have purple gills (nothing with brown gills is active in the area) Psilocybe have have shiny, smooth viscous cap that are often sticky.
Before you go out again I recommend to google image search 'Psilocybe azurescens' and study the images for a good hour to get an idea of what you're looking for.

Thank you,
I've been scrolling through the pnw actives thready on image only trying to train my eyes. Some of my Cortinarius caps have a very silky almost iridescent heen to them.
