I just came up with my own rule that nothing should be microwaved twice.
And what I mean is after it's been nuked once, that's it. Eat it or throw it away. You can't renuke a nuked meal.
Reason: it's gross.

I can dig that rule. I don't think I have ever microwaved something more than once. I only microwave leftovers and then it is the portion that I will eat in that sitting. And recently I have been trying to reheat leftovers in a pan or the oven if I can.

That logic seems flawed to me. Either it would be weird microwaved something or not...
What is going to happen the second time that didn't the first?

Its very rare that I'll use a microwave, probably like 2 dozen times in the past decade. But yeah, its gross enough the first time, the second time its dog food.
On the stove you can usually reconstitute something with a little steam, oil or fresh sauce. Probably need more salt too, fridges have a way of draining out flavor in leftovers.

I was just reading up on leaving soup out to cool. Apparently even within 1 or 2 days bacteria can start breaking down the sugars and fats and hurt the flavor.
Then they also leave a bunch of dead bacteria and in some cases toxins which boiling can render inert. But then you have a bunch of inert toxins in the soup

Soup is easy though, it should last around 3 days and can be reconstituted with a little salt.
I worked with one guy who would leave the shit on after deveining shrimp, and hang the knife up with all the other knives. He would also cut raw poultry and fish on the salad boards, and basically never wiped down surfaces (so after cutting that fish there would be a puddle on the salad board still)...

Fucking unbelievable
If you eat out, you're bound to eat a lot of really unsanitary food because people are crazy, so 3 day old soup should be fine as long as it doesn't smell and you keep it boiling for a couple of minutes.

I have learned this the hard way a few times getting food poisoning... I hope to almost never eat out one day. Will save a ton of $.
Soup can definitely last awhile, I just thought it was interesting that 1 or 2 days out can compromise the flavor and make a second boiling necessary.

One of my favorite restaurants has chicken fried steak so big, it takes me 3 meals to eat it all. I don't bother splitting the leftovers in half, so yes when I eat there, I do end up usually microwaving something twice.

I'd like to skip eating out as well, but sometimes its nice for the setting, like post trip or after a concert. There are tricky recipes, or recipes which need a lot of prep / ingredients, and then there are a lot of cooks who are way better than me so it can be worth the $$$
Man I'm paranoid though, after 3 days I won't eat it, have had food poisoning too many times (today)

It is very nice sometimes, I eat out/ order in way too much though. I love ordering thai food cooking asian stuff is fun too but its so dank when authentic.
My mom got food poisoning last night I think, pretty scary how uncommon it is in some cases. Usually only happens to me on occasion but damn does it suck
I tend to toss a lot of stuff do to paranoia too

I'm a pretty damn paranoid eater. I don't let shit shit outside for more than an hour if it's wet food. If I don't consume left overs within a couple days, it gets tossed. I clean out my fridge regularly. I wouldn't eat soup if it's been sitting out for more than a couple hours, probably less. I refuse to drink a bottle of water or something if it's been opened and sitting for the day, let alone anything with sugar in it.
I'm not big on cold foods either. I like everything to be pretty warm when I eat it. I don't do rare cooked meats either, gotta be medium-well to well-done.
You talking about the dude who didn't clean the knives after use on chicken and shit absolutely horrifies me.
I do eat out a lot though. Not fast food really, only quick service or full service type restaurants.

I'm not opposed to things like sushi though. And latex gloves are actually dirtier to cook with than hands that are regularly washed.

That sounds pretty overkill, I bet its better to expose yourself to moderate amounts of bacteria regularly then avoid in honestly.
From what I read it takes at least 24-48 hours for bacteria to multiply to harmful levels in most cases but clearly things like meat are more finicky.
When leaving stuff out I am more worried about eating fly eggs or something then actually getting sick from the food

Some of my favorite moments in life have been stopping by a nice restaurant late in a trip, after all the madness it feels so good to sit around blabbing with beer and food I can never cook + didn't have to cook.
Got food poisoning last night from alfredo sauce, it was in the fridge when it broke last week
