infected batch?

so last weekend I took my first attempt at 1 grain jar, and 2 trays. I figured I would try popcorn since I have no idea where to get rye berries. I boilled the popcorn for at least half an hour, let cool then added to tray and jar, I also added some coir on the trays. I will admit I did not sterilize the coir, I took a chance since it was so fine I wasnt sure how to.
Anyways, I just looked at my trays and they were starting to have a sweet smell to them. I pulled the tin foil away and the layer of corn on the bottom of they trey is totally white, not mycelium and white fuzz is on the top of the tray. Also the jar has some very fine white fuzz on the top, the same smell as well.
so wtf, I am assuming this is all garbage now. And what did I do wrong, I dont have a pressure cooker, but a 45 min boil should kill anything, no?
I dont see as much on the grain jar but I assume its toast as well.
Help?

Hmm, sure doesn't sound good. The trouble with grains is that it's easy for them to become contaminated if they don't get fully colonized first before being spawned to a substrate.
I'm a little confused about your method; did you follow a tek at all? What were your steps? Do you have any pictures?

ok thanks, I suppose I am confused as to the amount of time required to kill bacteria via boiling, is there another way to sterilize with out a PC in the mean time? Oven I assume?
Ill keep an eye out for a PC

If you're bent on sterilizing without a cooker, why don't you start with PF cakes? They're way easier to do without access to a pressure cooker than any grain method would be.

Used properly, it is your gateway to everything in this hobby you could ever want to do, as well as your single best method for sterilizing moderate amounts of sub with confidence. I sincerely wish it had been the first thing I had bought, rather than waiting until a few grows in. I can't imagine trying to do agar or grains without it...I'd be a basket case just waiting for the contams to set in...
