Cleaning perlite. ??

This might be a stupid question, but I searched the Forums and found nothing.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the perlite should be cleaned occasionally to prevent contams. How do I clean it though?? I think I read once that you simple rinse and then bake it to remove the moisture??

or you could just replace with fresh since it is relatively inexpensive

I agree with the replace comment!!
but you could just throw it all in a pillow case /strainer ... and wash it under the tap, maybe bleach it, then rinse it and re-use it... should be ok!

I put it into a strainer and run water over it. That seems to do the trick.

Perlite in pillowcase, soak in 10% bleach solution. With the pillow case, you can easily just fill a sink, bucket, or bathtub with solution and not have to worry about perlite sticking to anything but the pillowcase. Of course, the fabric will lose some color.

Thanks.
I thought about replacement but being in Chicago limits the amout of stores that would carry it. I'm haveing trouble finding Scotts 50/50 too. Out of season I guess.
but I'll use the hot hot water and bleach method.

When I cleaned my tub, I just flushed the perlite under the fosset with water, mixed with chlorine (bleach) and let it sit for 2-3 hours to kill off all the mold that had formed, then rinsed it for an hour, re hydrated it and set it back.
Seems to work just fine:) (altough please give input, as I may have made a mistake:)
I had the understanding that perlite didnt attract molds, but that seems to be wrong. I am not sure what type of mold i got. All I know is that it was purple/lila colored and gre on the surface of the perlite. Would much like to know what it is:)

I think I picked all of them before they started dropping spores (pretty sure). The purple patch were far outside of the cake space, so I am kind of sure its not spores. Besides, small damn flying knots started going after my cakes, so I assumed that it had to be cleaned. And I was right, afterwards, it smelled way better than before...and looked better!
But thanks for the tip, Ill make sure to look for spores next time:)
Have a great day:)

you can get away with a low percentage of bleach in a wash but honestly you dont want that shit in your fc ... your mushies are absorbing that moisture from the air bleach and all ... just pasteurize it in cloth/nylon ... if its good enough to do the trick with shit its more than good enough to do it with perlite ...

Thank god he got his answer after 13 years.
Just to add, after a while sometimes the perlite will start to turn green like mine did this summer. In that case if you are a tight arse like me you take the whole box to the bath. Fill the box with bleachy water and keep topping it up. Leave to drain and you are back on the circuit again smashing the fungus.............
