Corn substrate
    #23794176 - 11/02/16 10:30 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hey folks!

Ok.
I don't know how that happened (my charms perhaps) but the local feed shop is going to dump their truck full of corn spent garbage at my place.

I want to use it as a substrate for oyster cultivation.

I noticed how little info there is out there on corn substrate.

And it's not "corn" not cobs.
I'll be posting pics when they deliver it.
It looks like thin flakes of paper.

Looks like it could really rock the shroom show.

Good luck, I wonder how it's 'spent'? Hopefully it still has enough nutrients to support a decent BE.

Aw, yeah, I did it again. Lol.

Yep, me too. Worth the trouble of checking into tweaking a recipe with molasse/wheat bran/coffee grounds/tea? in order to optimize output.

Yo! Well that was faster than expected.

Here's what it looks like:

ANy thoughts on pasteurization process?
Bag it, then steam sterilize in tank?

Distillers grains are a cereal byproduct of the distillation process.
There are two main sources of these grains. The traditional sources were from brewers. More recently, ethanol plants are a growing source. It is created in distilleries by drying mash, and is subsequently sold for a variety of purposes, usually as fodder for livestock (especially ruminants). Corn-based distillers grains from the ethanol industry are commonly sold as a high protein livestock feed that increases efficiency and lowers the risk of subacute acidosis in beef cattle.[1]
Recently, studies indicate that DDGS as a food source for human consumption may have some benefit in reducing heart disease risk.[2]

This datasheet will deal primarily with the DDGS of maize-based, dry-milling ethanol production, which are now the dominant distillery by-product.

Ah! Great site I wasn't aware of.

It's not spent.
As seen on the picture, it's the leftover from the mechanical seperation of the grains.
This ton batch contains still loads of Oats, Soy beans, Corn stalks and, for the most part, that pinkish flaky thing, which is from corn I believe.

So as it is, it is not used in any specific fermentation or extraction process, but merely a mechanical byproduct.

The pink stuff comes off the cob...it's the stuff between the kernel and the cob itself.  You might sift out all the grain and other stuff and use it as a supplement in pasteurized substrates like straw or load some unsifted into bags and sterilize.  Oysters should enjoy it as a supplement.  Someone grew oysters on cob pellets a while back with great results.

I've read (can't remember where) that they use corn cob pellets to grow enoki commercially.
