Just wanted to share my sucess!! and ask a few??
    #23792713 - 11/01/16 07:40 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

First and foremost thank you to all who have helped me get this far I greatly appreciate all the advice and help. Here's a few pics from my last pf tek grow.

I just knocked up another 16 half pint brf cakes and another 12 small 4oz jars. With some g.t syringes I made myself. This will be my last grow using the pf tek and I plan on moving to rye berries for my spawn and a c/v/g substrate mix. So today I went and got a dozen qt. Jars and some rtv Silicone for self healing injection ports for the lids. Now here lies my questions should I use a L.c for inoculating my grains over a m.s syringe? And is there any lid tek you would recommend in particular? I've seen many different designs and my thought was two 1/4" holes one with Rtv and the other with 3+ layers of micropore tape for g.e. what do you guys think of that would that work for both grain jars and lc jars? Also what's your preference on rye berries over wbs or the other way around?

Nice! I think you and I are on a similar path, so I look forward to seeing how things go for the two of us.
My plans are to use rye berries w/ agar, tho I will experiment a bit w/ lc too.
Sorry I don't really have answers for you, but it's cool to see another beginner finding success. Fun stuff.

Thanks man definitely curious to agar as well. My main reason for lc is that I've read it can also be a good start for psilocybe cyanescan growth that I can then use to inoculate a large outdoor bed. So I'll definitely be watching your post as well what verities you working with at the moment?

Never start an LC with spores, you can't tell if it's clean or not and chances are it won't be. A proper LC needs to be inoculated with a clean agar wedge, colonized then tested on agar. Spores are dirty, you can get away with it on cakes but grains are less forgiving  Personally I wouldn't even use LC unless I had a few dozen jars to inoculate. Start with agar, if you can make jello you can make agar. Check my signature for agar links.

Best filters for grain jars is SFD's or synthetic filter disks. You don't need ships because you can just crack the lid in the SAB.
Don't use micropore tape for grain jars, it can cause problems. If you don't use SFDs look into polyfill or Tyvek but SFD's are great.
Nice cakes btw:thumbup:

My advice to you is to take a clone from one of your fruits to agar. Make a few transfers to make sure it's clean-and then inoculate a 'master' jar with your grain of choice.
I have moved away from WBS and have started using oats. I'm extremely happy with the yields I get from oats and find them easier to use than WBS. I was unable to find Rye where I live so I cannot comment on them.

After inoculating the master, and after it is fully colonized-G2G the master to 12 quart jars and spawn two monotubs...

Clean grain spawn and healthy tubs!

I advise against MS syringe to grain... waste of time in my opinion and a risk-choice in regards to bacteria that the ms syringe more than likely has in it.

You can also take a small piece that you would have filled the master jar with and start another plate to do it again.

Over time, it is best to create a slant that you can keep for a long period of time that won't grow "old".

This method is completely my opinion.
Get into agar -and get bigger yields!

I have some random stuff. My first batch of 4 cakes was GT, but I have a few other cakes colonizing that are B+ & Huatla, plus 1 burma. I used some GT spores from a syringe on some plates that I *think are healthy, (I will post pics soon to gather opinions).
My plan is to shot gun all the cakes I have in about 3 weeks, maybe make a lc from a plate and makes some cakes out of that, (since I still have BRF cake supplies), and then make a monotub w/ the rest of my GT plates if they seem healthy.
Because this is new to me, I don't know that I'm ready for outdoor stuff, but let us know how that goes. What region are you in?
I'm in a cold area and use space heaters, so it will be interesting to see how things go as the temp starts to dip. Colder temps are supposed to prolong things, so hopefully it doesn't instill bad habits as I try to try to troubleshoot my way through being patient...
I'm going to turn my 'reply notification' back on so hopefully we can stay in touch
Good luck!

Thank you, that's the answer I needed. Will definitely stay clear of lc for my cubensis (still going to try lc for some psilocybe cyanescan culture) and go the agar route with that said.

I've seen alot of debate on wbs/oat/rye/ and even popcorn tek I'm curious roughly what do the oats yield per say 66q tote?

Definitely look forward to seeing your plates man. Nice mix I also have g.t and B+ but have been really wanting to order some Cambodians and this Texas orange cap I keep reading about. And I live in the beautiful pnw region.

Make your kids (lids) like this

As everyone said don't go lc to grain, it's not the safest way.

Agar is easy enough to get into and you'll be able to make a safer decision on what you use to nocc your grain up with.

Use a ms syringe too, not a terrible choice, good luck !

If I'm not pulling 9-10 oz dry off of the first flush on a 66qt tub - something went wrong.

You can easily grab a dry onion off of every quart of spawn you use (on the first flush) in your tub as long as it is clean grain. 2oz dry on every quart if you can really get field capacity, conditions and grain moisture content on lock. Hell, I bet Pasty is pulling 13 oz dry off of 5 quarts of spawn by now...

All together off of a 66qt tub, through its entire life-I usually see at least 15oz dry.

I have so many tubs going though-I usually don't have room to keep them around after their 2nd flush.

I have 3 stacks of 5 tubs and 1 stack of 4 - total of 19 tubs going...

The wife says I'm not allowed to buy any more tubs. She says to "Work with what I've got..."

Thank you, I like that lid design. Are those 1/4" holes? And thank you yeah I've been doing alot of research and realize that is def the wrong way. I think I'm gonna start with the grocery store agar tek using 4oz wide mouth jars. And use that to isolate a good g.t. and B+ culture. Then to grains. What do you use as a filter on those lids?

Perfect, very informative answer I appreciate it couldn't be more spot on. That's way more my pace. Haha. These cakes have been great but just not enough if ya know what I mean. Lol. I'd like to get a few stacks going as well. Wife actually is super intrigued by my new hobby and is starting her own morel garden when the time comes. And helping with my cyan patch so well see how long that lasts. Haha.

Morty and Mr.Mazda thanks for the good laugh too. Haha. That was good.

You might check out Pastywhyte's Agar Tek.  It's a great way to get started on agar.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19208415

As for grains I've been using corn, but after I use up these two bags I've already got, I'm going to try and find some rye.  I can get a 40lb. bag of "deer corn" for $4.50 right now, but my prep time and contam rates are frustrating.  I'm thinking about just feeding it to the squirrels.

Looks like your off to a good start. Congrats on your grow.
