Now is the time to seed for a guerilla poppy crop in the spring!
    #23790223 - 11/01/16 12:16 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Funny story...
On one of my regularish hikes, I came across some poppies with bright red leaves. The seemed to bleed sap when sliced....soooo I cut a bunch of them and took them home.
I followed the tek for making smokables from pod juice- but my pod goo lacked punch.
Did some research and figured out I had discovered some bunk variety poppies! Why even make such a thing??
No worries- Amazon Prime to the rescue! I ordered a pound of seeds that fit my criteria and spent several hikes happily slinging the tiny seeds to and fro among the rocks and weeds.
One thing I did notice, is that in my area, the flowers would only grown in the barren looking areas- but not in the more lush, fertile looking areas.
Fast forward to the next spring and I had pretty white flowers strewn all along the path. I could even tell that the rain and flood waters had moved some of my seeds downstream.
I harvested in several different cuttings. It seems that the flowers matured at different times on different parts of the trails. The upstream pods were ready several weeks before the downstream pods were.

I have the seeds I saved from the pods I cracked open, and the flowers also naturally reseed themselves, so I leave the first and the biggest pods to fall naturally where the grew. I'm thinking I may go my the Indian grocery and see what kind of seeds they have and add them to my mix. I think I paid around $10 a pound for the seeds. Pretty good bang for your buck.

They are now sprouting here from natural seeding. The winter might kill some off but very rarely all. Those that pull through will be the largest plants of next summer. Same year sowings never seen to do as well for me. More prolific sprouts, but smaller plants overall compared to autumn seedlings that overwinter. A good head start for them.

You seed in the fall, so the will sprout and grow in the spring.

In my area (zone 9ish) they are ready in mid April to mid May.

Full sun, and I never water or do anything to them. VERY hardy plants.

Very easy to do, and very inexpensive.

Yeah, when I grew them,I just tossed the seeds and let nature do it's thing.

I only once tried to fertilize poppies, sand it burnt them up pretty bad,so I never did it again.

They just don't need fertilizer and thrive in poor soil.

The only time I've ever had luck with poppies was sowing them in rows in the garden. I'm in 6b, not sure when the best time to sow is. I'd like to sow in the fall because I've heard good things but it gets pretty cold and if any sprouted I'm sure they would most likely die. Anyone know the best time?

I'm 7A and it's much too cold in the winter to do a fall grow here.

You would need to start yours outdoors in February or March:cool:

Nah y'all missin it. Poppies overwinter yo.
You plant them like now or a few weeks prior, they will grow into little shrubby weed thangs right next to the ground, then they are prepared for the winter where they go dormant. Until the perfect time in spring when they will shoot up 3-4 feet and produce your flowers. Beautiful and., o
Or you can also seed them in the spring they will just take an extra month to produce and prob wouldn't be as prolific as if you seeded them early, their natural way.
So spread seed my friends spread it!
Cheers
Ps guerilla? I grow these in my backyard and nobody has a clue wtf I'm doing when I'm out there lancing em... Hahaha!

India grows a lot of poppies.
Indian grocery stores sell large bags of poppy seeds.
Get a pound. If you're doing it guerilla style, you'll be throwing them out by the handful.

Poppies are designed to overwinter on their own.
That's why you plant them now, so they'll already be on the ground, and just waiting for the right conditions in spring.
That's exactly how nature does it.

I already know fall is the best way and time to sow poppies, but for us people that don't live in warm grow zones,it's not practical to do it in the fall.

If  you live in a place that gets extremely freezing cold, and gets heavy snowfall, poppies will not overwinter and be there for you the following spring, and I have tried this a million times.
It probably could be done in 6B but that's pushing it.

I by no means am a poppy expert, but I started growing poppies nearly 20 years ago,and I have lived in several different states in that time.

This being said,I have seen which sates that will overwinter in,and which states they either wont,or you may get a handful of seedlings that make it.

I wont go into all that, but I will say,I wouldn't waste the seeds living in 6B,and I would just throw them out in February for blooms in late spring early summer:cool:

But then again, you could try to sow some fall poppies and see what you get,you could be surprised.

I would just do both, and see what works the best for you, that way you don;t end up wasting all your seeds:thumbup:

Here is some info I found on the net,and notice it says what I just told you about overwintering,as does every other site that has poppy growing info I go to too.

• WHEN to plant will depend on which USDA Zone you are located in, but generally, seeds will sprout whenever Temps rise above Freezing, as Poppies prefer cool Temperatures during the Germination and Seedling stages.
• Poppy Seeds can be planted in either FALL, early SPRING, or BOTH (depending on how Mild your Winters are.
• Results of Planting in Fall will provide earlier, and much larger blooms the following Spring, whereas Planting in Spring will still result in a spectacular display of Blooms, but just in early Summer.

Now read this last carefully;)

"Seeds take roughly 2 weeks to Sprout. Alternately, you can plant half your seeds in the Fall, and half in the Spring, but if you get a lot of snow in your area, they’ll die"

So,if you live in any states above the southern states I would think it gets harder,if not impossible to over winter them effectively.

Now,I'm patiently waiting to be proved wrong:yesnod:

Doing both fall and spring this year. Seed viability test resulted in sprouts after 7 days.  Did not count # of seeds sewn but so far results look to be in the 90%+ range.  Been a warm fall in Texas.  Kratom is still going strong.

Looks like Kabul Afghanistan is 7b... so you might just be a little bit behind the line for fall seeding. They plant in fall and harvest in May over there.
I'm not familiar with "snow", or things like shoveling sidewalks...so I guess this is for people in normal states.  :hehehe:

When do your spring crops come in??
