inks from inky caps?
    #23788755 - 10/31/16 02:21 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hi everyone,
Apologies if this is not the right forum; no other forums seemed to be the right place for this question.
So, I've seen comments on the shroomery and on the web saying that inky caps can be used to make ink. Does anyone have any experience with this, or can you point me to resources that have some info?

Just to clarify, I've done some searching on here and have seen posts asking about making printer inks from inky caps, but I'm looking for info on different types of inks. I have an old printing press and do letterpress printing as a hobby, and I'd love to experiment with mushroom-based inks. Similarly, if anyone has info about making dyes (I know some Cortinarius species have been used to make fabric dyes) I'm curious about that too.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

put the caps in a cup then harvest the black liquid. boil it briefly and then add some sort of preservative oil. clove oil is traditionally used.

dip pens and fountain pens may require some modifications to the ink's thickness. gum arabic is a pretty standard thickener for inks.

Thanks, bodhisatta. I'll give it a try.

I remember reading the same in an old book from the interbellum period. They let the inky caps liquify by standing, heat the liquid to boiling, add a few drops of clove oil and gum arabic to the desired consistency.

I had no idea people made ink with mushrooms, how awesome.  I long-stitch my own leather journals and mushroom ink would be perfect for them.  I'll definitely have to get ahold of some shaggy manes and try this myself.

I ran across these examples of what shaggy mane ink looks like with a dip pen, which are also a brief how-to.
