First time grower question
    #23788136 - 10/31/16 10:37 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Dear fellow mushroom enthusiasts,

First time grower here and I'm having a bit of an issue.
I know it is looked down upon here but I bought a pre-made grow kit online to dip my feet in the world of growing mushrooms. I went through the whole process and a couple of days ago the first mushrooms appeared.

My problem is that a whole day or 2 before the kit floor filled with mushrooms, a single mushroom emerged at the edge of the kit. It grew weirdly and the cap of the mushroom is upside-down. It is now at least three times the size of the other mushrooms and because of it's weird growth the veil has already broken.
A large amount of the smaller mushrooms are growing from the base of the large one.
I'm worried it is gonna start going black and dying soon and it will affect the 10-12 smaller mushrooms growing out of it's base.
Should I pick it early, should I leave it be, should I be worried?
I will be able to upload some pictures later today.
Any advice is welcome as this is a crucial time in the lifespan of my mushroom babies.

Thank you in advance.

i guess you are talking about a cluster of mushrooms growing?
without a pic and based off your discription i guess you mean
something looking like this?

but one of the larger fruits is upside down? which happens.

you could pick the larger one and leave the others behind or are they all
connected?

sometimes they come like this one. see the difference in shroom size?

i kant reed. kned pixx

Seems like a normal 'mutant' mushroom.
In your case, go ahead and twist that baby off, being careful not to disturb the substrate and the other mushrooms growing around it-as they will more than likely continue to grow. If you can slice the mushroom at the base with a clean knife you can do that as well and simply leave the 'stump' behind. It will not harm your grow either.

You can harvest any mushroom at any time. It will not affect the others unless they are in a cluster that won't let go of each other.

Obligatory: Don't use grow kits! Grow kits suck!

Mushboy beat me to it... His advice is sound as well...

Yes, it is a cluster... a cluster fuck.

I would not be able to pick the large one without disturbing the dozen smaller ones growing from it's base.
I guess if I start seeing visible signs of deterioration I can slice it with a sterile knife. Or should i just cut my losses and pull out he whole cluster?

I really appreciate the quick replies guys .

I wouldn't take the whole cluster. I would cut the big guy out as close as I could to the others without disturbing them.

Some pics would really be helpful though....
The others in that cluster-fuck might not be as far behind as you think. If you left the big guy there, the most he will do is blow spores all over your other mushrooms and if you don't care about that then by all means leave him there.

I am sort of picky about my mushrooms though, and I don't like them to splooge on each other...so I usually find a way to get a hold of the big guys one way or another...

Seriously though....pics!

cut that bitch down leave the other ones

clusters can grow in all sorts of ways.. sometimes cluster fucks are awesome!

on a more constructive note...

stab a bunch of holes in that damn choke bag.
they are suffocating. imagine you inside that bag:thumbdown:
IDEALLY build a SGFC for less then 15bucks. it will last for many a grow.

The bag has a filtered hole about the size of a matchbox near the top.
Won't cutting holes in the bag allow bacteria to get in?

I will look into building an SGFC for myself for future grows, thank you for the advice.

fruiting is not a sterile process.

:thumbup:for thinking about bacterial issues.

some of the big shots here fruit in open air.

if your spawn(substrate..(the white fuzzy shit in your kit)..) is clean
fruiting is a breeze.

mushrooms need fresh air exchange. think of it like a air current. how can
that happen with a 1x1 inch opening covered with a 'filter patch'?
thats why they are called choke bags.

poke holes in that bag. trust me. or wait for others to chime in
if you need that extra opinion.

:whathesaid:

Poke holes in that bag my friend.

These manufacturers of said grow kits have little to no knowledge of cultivation and want that money.

Mushrooms MUST have FAE or they will not grow properly. That filter is giving it little to no fresh air.
