Gymnopilus
    #23787434 - 10/31/16 01:49 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Gathering the Allenii in the foothills I stumbled upon an orange yellow mushroom.
Thought nothing of it.
Days later in a town over at the same chain hardware store, they use the same brand woodchip.

I noticed this gym looking mushroom again

But it doesn't look like a gym.
So I thought nothing.

Upon close inspection I noticed green bruising ever so faint it's hard to do justice with camera phone.

I taste tested it.
Long enough to get the distinctive bitter aftertaste of Gymnopilus.
It tastes like Gymnopilus.
So bitter.

Here are the pictures.
I am going to harvest them and dry them tommorow.

Are these "hedgehogs"? Can they be eatn?
Excuse the out of focus shots.
Sorry.

What are these beauty?
Smelly fuckers.

I see it too.  That rugged cap sure looks like a Pholiota, but I think it's just weather beaten.  Spore print them to be sure, but I agree - I think they are Gymnopilus.

No, not Hedgehogs.  Maybe something more like Hohenbuehelia petaloides.

Paxillus involutus.

Paxillus involutus. Is this what some call the "Poison pax"?

Possibly.
Wiki says its mycorrhizal.
The second location harbored trees.
But the original was devoid of trees about 100ft on each direction in an "island" in a parking lot.

Spore prints for those suspect gyms.

Seem rusty. Sorry for poor exposure. Cloudy day.
