These came in a kit and were growing in less than perfect conditions in a cool basement.

your cool basement's not the problem. Keeping your jars upside down could be, however. Using a growkit could also be the issue. Is this midwest grow kits? Their directions are retarded. It's probably time to do a little reading on here, and we'll all try and get you back on track.

It's like this: We're home cultivators. So, we gotta sometimes get things to work for us, in ways other than intended. This is much like the PF tek. It's not recommended to go from spore syringe to grains, because of the high likelihood of contams. But PF tek is highly nutritious and a cake can perform excellently even while being very bacterial.
The filter we use in the standard PF tek is the dry verm layer on the top of the jar. It's gotta remain dry, and stay settled for it to work. It's not like vermiculite is designed to filter anything, it's just how this is rigged. It works too, but you need to keep the integrity of the filter for as long as possible. Letting it get moist with that foil, blocking it with your shelf, and otherwise moving your jars all over the place ruins the integrity of your filter, and the lowered gas exchange will invite contams to take hold.
This means 1, you keep it dry (take the foil off the damn lids after inoculating). 2, that the jar should not be moved around a whole lot, especially not layed on it's side or upside down. Those jars, are pint jars, which isn't really recommended. Widemouth half pints are much better. The tall pints often will stall out, and the vermiculite will often get compacted, making full colonization difficult (which is why midwest often says to put them upside down, rather than providing a better product).

Hey dank thanx for the detailed explanation. I myself just dealt with a stalled and I guess eventually contained half gallon jar.I've been reading and getting helped along the way some. I attribute my fuck up to be that I didn't use enough g2g to make colonization fast enough (since in every move were trying to beat the clock against who will take over first; mushroom mycelia or contams), poor GE; the jar was a pickle jar and was filled almost all the way up, and grain not being properly prepared. Kind of a long list but I'm trying to get it. Anyway I was thinking if I was Mr.F what would I do... First I'd get the shit to make some agar at home. Make me some plates see if syringe is contaminated. If so isolate until I have clean culture. Second I would check my spawn. That will take a clean culture to inoculate with anyway right?!... Third get PC and make my own spawn. Unless not possible in which case I would find (no better place to ask/look then here) a reliable source.
Is that right?
