Its been 30 years since I left elementary school and I'm still fighting to free my inner child from the lockstep of the 1970s schooling system.
With the exception of the canings my education was much like in The Wall.

When I was a kid my mom would force my family to church on Sunday's. At the end my dad and I would sneak out the back so we didn't have to touch or talk to anyone

Yeah I had to do a sit-down with our priest before I made my confirmation, which was in his little house, the rectory maybe it is called. Anyways I'll never forget that sitting right next to his armchair there was a cardboard box filled with bottles of liquor. Always kinda thought it odd that he didn't see fit to put that away before he went inviting a bunch of 17 18 year olds into his place alone, but he was a nice guy overall.

My question is what do you consider brainwashing? Couldn't everything you learn as a child be considered brainwashing? I was brainwashed into thinking 2 + 2 = 4.
I was raised Catholic and attended a Catholic school until high school. So that was 15 years of church twice a week for the most part, religion classes, etc. But I never felt pressured to 'believe' what they were teaching us. The teachers, at least to me, did a good job of not forcing the religion down our throats, but more or less just taught us about it and the lessons to be learned. And that is how religion should work. Many religions in the end say the same thing, but just in a different way.
I do remember the whole walking in line shit though. I was constantly 'on the wall' (we literally had to stand/sit with our backs against the brick wall of the school building watching all our classmates have fun during recess) for 5 - 15 minutes during out recess for all sorts of acting out that got me in trouble. I definitely learned how far I could bend the rules and that is something that is still part of me now.

I think the distinction between education and brainwashing would depend on intent and who is doing the conditioning.
Retarded beliefs were fed to me growing up, but that was just what my family believed. On the other hand the DARE program is literal propaganda, its a feeble attempt at brainwashing.

I think one may feel brainwashed if they never take the time to look back on what they believe in and question those things. This reminds me of an online philosophy class for my girlfriend (which I really enjoyed) and how ridiculous some of the comments were from people in the discussion post. This was in the first paragraph of the text book that was assigned for the class.
"Many of our religious, political, and moral beliefs are beliefs that we accepted as children long before we could question them or understand the reasons behind them. Philosophy examines these beliefs. The aim is not to reject them but to learn why we hold them and to ask whether there are good reasons to continue holding them. In their way, our basic beliefs about reality and life become our own:We accept them because we have thought through them on our own, not because our parents, peers, and society have conditioned us to believe them."

Intent would be hard to justify though. One may think they are doing the right thing and are not inflicting any harm by teaching younger children something, does that rule it out as brainwashing then?

I agree, and I think your position is interesting.
In a pure sense I don't think there's a difference, so education vs brainwashing becomes a spectrum. For practical purposes it depends on who, how and why.

Other than pledging allegiance every morning, not really..
I also grew up in a religious environment, never felt forced or anything, it was like going to school, which I hated.. I never payed attention anyway..
I hear finland lets their kids play all day and never give them homework, and apparently they're doing very good academically.. Wish it would've been like that hear, I didn't start learning until I dropped out of school and gained alittle independence.. If I had started out like that earlier shit id probably be an astronaut or a rocket surgeon by now..

I seriously think I would have been a straight A student if it weren't for homework. I could go to class and bullshit about any topic with the best of them. I can't count the times I had parent-teacher meetings and they were like "moonrock is very capable and grasps the material, but unfortunately I am failing him because he didn't do homework"
Some teachers would throw me a B because they liked me, but I failed alot of classes where I was taking time in class to help other students grasp the material. Seems fucked.

7th Grade Science class Mr Good who everyone loved failed me because I didn't complete my moon journal. In retrospect he did me a favor. He taught me that out of hundreds of kids I was one of two who refused to go out and stare at the moon and draw it in one of those stupid blue test booklets. Out of those two kids I was the one who will go to his grave without handing in a moon journal. Fuck that shit.
