Japaneese Rice Cookers for larger cakes
    #2378312 - 02/26/04 07:55 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Has anyone considered using a japaneese rice cooker for the steriliztion of substrates?  It would seem like a simple enough choice.  The rice cooker will boil the rice + whatever other contents are in the pot at a high heat for about 45min and vent out of a tiny hole in the lid.  That hole could then be used for inoculation and covered with chewing gum/wax/whatever you feel like after the substrate was inoculated.  This would provide a simple, and relatively larger growing substrate and would in theroy would provide for much larger yeilds without a pressure cooker.  I dunno.. just an idea.  Rice cookers are cheap as well, as opposed to paying 40-100$ for a pc and another decent ammount for jars.  If anyone has tried this let me know, it would be greatly appreciated.  I tried searching the forums to no avail.

Oh.. and due to the fact that they normally have glass lids and a large flat planar surface on top, birthing the cakes wouldnt take much more than removing the lid from the cooker and providing the substrate ample lighting/humidity to induce fruiting. Im going to try this idea a few times and report back on it using traditional methods with slight modifications. If it works, it could easily cut down much of the strain associated with sterilization and the likes. Could be an easy way to grow without much hassle.

Well first o0f all do they get  as hot as a PC?

I think not, as for growing in them , well why not make a casing and throw it in a container??

and use your rice cooker for rice??

I am eating some rice right now actually and that what I think rice cookers are best for, making RICE

A pressure cooker cost me 150$ and it was worth every penny  a PC is well worth your money

I used a rice cooker to sterilize and I got 100% contamination. So I went to the nearest goodwill and got two pressure cookers for $4 each. They work great, now I have 0% contamination.

30-60$ for a good PC is VERY WELL WORTH IT..just so much easier using it with grains then mixing substrates together and steaming.

It's true. And you'll hear it a lot. Save your cash and get a PC.

Rice cookers rock

Mix up your grains first and precook
then load and sterilise in a PC

The extended cooking process aids better sterilisation by pretreating it and having fully hydrated when it goes in

Rice

First cup rice : 1.75 cups water
every cup after that 1 :2 ratio

Ryegrass seed

6 cups seed : 6 Cups water

Sorghum
6 cups sorghum : 5 Cups water

Millet
4.5 cups millet : 5 cups water

add a spoon of lime or gypsum plus supplements like sesame or soy grit without adding much extra water (if any)

AFOAF got a BIG PC off ebay for $25, it can fit 30 1.2 pint jars. It's really old, but looks like an AA PC, metal to metal seal.
