Does this mycelium look ok? Fast growth
    #23782924 - 10/29/16 03:10 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

inoculated on the 21 of this month. All of my petris are showing growth, but none like this one. This just showed up about 48 hrs ago and is growing pretty quick. It looks healthy, I'm just curious what you guys think.

Looks like mold to me.

When you can't identify a growth that is spreading much faster than your normal mycelium...chances are... it be moldz.

Your picture isn't extremely viewable-so it's hard for me to say 100%. However, that doesn't look like myc to me...

Let's wait for someone else to come in... I may be wrong.

I was worried it could be some kind of mold. I know the condensation makes for a poor pic, I apologize for that. I got the best I could.

I was hoping it was just healthy tomentose growth that started from where the solution splashed toward the side. It looks like it could possibly be. It's the first time I've had one get that look tho, so I wasn't sure.

I'll just isolate it and see how it goes.

Thanks anyway

I would also open it up in a still air/laminar flow environment and take a better look. If it looks okay there-go ahead and take a piece and throw it on another plate...you never know.

Without a better pictures that's my best advice.

If it's a tissue sample, it's got a contaminate, but if it's a spore to agar, then it's 100% contaminates.

It's spore->agar. The way it's starting from right at the edge and the speed of growth is what had me worried. You guys, and my worries, are more than likely correct.

I was able to get a few pics with a little better quality.

There's nothing else at all growing on this plate, so I'm inclined to believe my spore solution ran over to that side, or shot out of the syringe toward that side instead of just a drop in the middle. Honestly, I was drunk and it seems like there was one that I pressed a little too hard and squirted toward the side.

Maybe you guys can get a better look with these.

It looks like mycelium growing on an agar solution that is high in nutrient level - which is perfect for spore germination.

It looks okay to me - take a piece near the edge and transfer to another plate.

It's cobweb. I had one of those in a pasty plate once. Filled thee entire plate.

The more nutrients the agar has, the slower the mycelium colonizes, because it doesn't have to look as far for food.

Never thought of that. . Makes perfect sense.. just like the roots of trees.. extending far or not in search of water.

Which is why I use coarse vermiculite in my pf cakes, so the mycelium tries to colonize asap

So, is this a true case of cobweb? From what I've been reading on here over the last couple weeks, I wasn't even going to try suggesting cobweb, it should have covered the whole plate in the first 24 hrs had that been the case.

After that initial burst of speed in the first 48 hrs, it has slowed way down. I mean way down, it's barely grown since the first poor pic I took of it. It started around the same time the rest of my plates started showing germination, but none of the rest have any growth bigger than a dime. Just this one took off really quick, and has nearly stalled now.

I have other plates of the same strain, and that one is isolated away from the rest, so if I'm not comfortable with it, tossing it won't hurt me any.

I've grown more curious than worried. I've been searching through threads (using the search function of course) and getting advice and everything seems to contradict everything else, so I'm going to hold on to it for now and see how it progresses between now and when I get more plates poured tonight.

I'll keep the thread updated tho, because if this is true cobweb, it should be extremely rare, and would make a nice addition to the examples of the real deal.

All,of that set of plates had high nutrient levels btw. I was doing half of the total recipe and I forgot to  divide the corn syrup in half like I did everything else. It actually has twice the sugars of the potato flake agar recipe.

It slowed down because it's fighting bacteria. Mine was a clean transfer from another petri. Like you, I was excited that I found a fast isolate. Except, my first transfer was from a wood chips I found outside near a mushroom. I should have taken the tissue sample directly from the mushroom instead of being presumptuous.

ok guys, I'm not sure it's cobweb. He squirted spores onto the dish. It looks like it's super tomentose from all the nutrition and genetics. I'd say transfer some from the edges and see what happens.

Haha, well, hope you're right, but betting my money on cobweb.

Once OP transfers away from that second life form is going to go nuts again.

I'll probably be able to do my transfers tonight (maybe, I'm tired as hell, I may only get the plates poured), or tomorrow. So, I'm guessing we're going to find out soon.

This is just a guess, cause I don't have a clue, but for the sake of hope, I'm going to go with Dankington.

We can start a lotto and I'll let the winner choose a print from one of the three strains on my current pf jars, they should be ready by new years. I did 4 jars each for the new years party and 4 petris each for the long term.

So, who all is for tomentose cube mycelium, and who all is for cobweb?

Choice of a print for the winners: GT, AA+, or F+.

If it's cobweb, you can keep your prints
Never heard of F+
Good luck though :super:

The more I look at it the more I second guess myself...
I really want to say that is mycelium that doesn't want to go anywhere anytime soon...but if it grew extremely fast in the first 48 hours than that might be mold.

Cobweb?

I think the entire plate would be completely covered already if it was cobweb... Not sure though-I've never personally had cobweb...it's quite rare to see.

Regardless - transferring a piece of it to another plate will be the best way to see if what you have is mold or not...
If you transfer it and it takes the fuck off - then I bet it's mold.

I still can't say for sure though.
