Is my tub healthy?
    #23779554 - 10/28/16 08:54 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Hello guys! I've train a few failed monotubs in the past and I'm giving it another go. I have a tub of GT that had 10 days for the spawn run and has been in FC for 10 days now. Knots appeared about 5 days ago and some pins appeared 2 days ago. It's my understanding that with cubes you should be going from pins to mature fruits in 3 days or so, but my pins are have either stopped growing altogether or are extremely slow. The mushroom fruit in the first pic has been pretty much at that stage or growth for 2 days.

Is it normal to have this many aborts? Should I be concerned with the tub? I have good FAE I believe and I have started to remove the Polyfill from the top holes for a few hours a night for a boost. The second pic is a ground level view of the sub. I seem to have developed these mounds of soft fuzzy myc and I think I read somewhere that this is caused by low FAE. Could this be the case?

Thanks!

Your tub looks too wet. You shouldn't have to mess with the pollyfill after its in. Unless you are trying to dial it in better.

can you take a better photo of the outside of your tub?

IMO its FEA, thats the only problem i see. I say that b/c of the moisture in the tub. remember also, evaporation of the moisture is a pinning trigger.

The sub has large water droplets in the center and a fine mist or no water visible at all on the outsides. I did not want to loosen the poly because I was afraid the sub would dry out. Honestly I thought the water droplets on the sub was ideal. Is this wrong? So, assuming the tub is too wet would I be able to fan it over the next few days and salvage it? Thanks for the input.

Maybe loosen or take the top filters out IMO

loosen those top ones a little bit and come back tomorrow and see how everything is. It just seems like you need to dial in that bad boy and youll be good.

are you doing a 12 on and 12 off for light ?

are you circulating the air in the room with a fan?  Also, you might want to fan out the tub for 20-30 seconds once or twice a day.  The little beads of water on the substrate surface look about right...one last thing is to remove that blue foam liner from the lid, which serves to create a seal (i've used that sterlite 'weather tight' tub before, and always ended up having to remove that foam gasket, since it creates too much of a seal (compared to the typical lids on other tubs such as the sterlite 66 qt latch box which has no gasket on the lid)

Thanks for your feedback, guys. I came home today to a lot more pins but all still pretty small. I'll update the thread in a few days to let you know the result.

I bought this tub specifically for the weatherstrip lol. I thought it would be a good thing. Maybe not. I have another tub going without the weather stripping, I'm just trying to find a tub that works for me. And yes I do have a fan in the room about 4ft away and blowing into the corner opposite the tubs. I cranked the fan up a notch to get more air circulating.

I have the tubs in a small room with a window. The window is open for sunlight so the tubs are getting direct natural sunlight during the day. My understanding was that this was enough light, would a artificial light cycle really be better? I have money to spend on this project so if I need to set this up I can, I just didn't think it was necessary.

the tubs in my signature use that same tub. click the link and then find out how to use that tub to do that

Just to update, the mushies are definitely growing but man they are slow. This is the tub in its current state and it took 3 days to get from the original post to this. I loosened the poly and turned the fan up a notch and I can see from the water beads that there is a lot more air circulation now. Could they be growing slow because of temp? The room they are in is 74

Substrate still looks way too wet. You need to get some of that excess moisture and large droplets of water off the sub, but only just...

Don't over dry it! Those large droplets of water are a tell-tale sign that more FAE can be introduced without any harmful side-effects... More FAE is definitely what a great pinset wants...

Also, what was your tek during this tub?

Is this MS>Grain? MS>Agar>Grain? Clone>agar>Grain? Etc...?
----------------------
Moisture level in the substrate is KEY to a good healthy fruiting. This is definitely when field capacity accuracy comes into play. A massive pinset needs massive water and lots of FAE to continue to grow out and fruit vigorously.

Extreme amounts of substrate moisture on top of the mycelium can offset a good pinset and cause aborts. The surface moisture (droplets) need to be smaller in your tub.

In my experience, a properly dialed-in monotub will constantly get lots of FAE-which means the droplets on top of the mycelium are constantly being evaporated. When the top layer is dried out via evaporation (and the droplets begin to shrink and disappear), water is pulled from the bottom substrate to the top of the substrate's surface via diffusion. It continues to evaporate, etc...

Water likes to "even itself out" in the substrate (or medium) just like most all other liquids or gases...

So water is constantly being pulled to the areas that are driest (the top).

This is why when you first spawn a monotub and the mycelium takes over your top layer-you can always see those fine droplets of moisture all throughout the top of your substrate. The droplets will usually stick around until after the first flush. This happens even when you never open the lid. No one sprayed it to make it appear there...it rose from the bottom levels of the substrate below it.

This constant evaporation allows for high levels of humidity at the substrate level-which stimulates pinning and causes you to have that big, full pinset.

In my opinion, you didn't get a great pinset because of how wet your top layer of substrate/mycelium is...or because the bio-efficiency of your tub is low due to bacterial contaminates from dirty spawn.

I'm not sure how your spawn was inoc'd so I can't say that it is actually dirty spawn...but I can definitely tell you your top most layer of water droplets are too large and you can increase FAE safely-which can never hurt.

That tub looks pretty good. Pinsets not bad either, loads of knots moving in still as well. If that is ms I would say it's pretty standard yet will probably be decent in the end.

Yes yes yes more fresh air. Better to err on the side of FAE than humidity. I do monotubs with a total of about 10-15 holes of 1"-2". I cover them with non-breathable tape while they are colonizing, and when I fruit them, I rip off all the tape and let that sucker breathe through all the holes 24/7 to initiate pinning. Then, I keep an eye on it over the course of fruiting, and if it is getting and staying too dry in between mistings, I will start to cover some of the holes with micropore tape to control the humidity.

Here's an example. Some holes wide open, some partly taped, some completely taped. It's all about paying attention to the tub as a whole, as well as the small variations in microclimates within the tub. Water pooling a tiny bit on this side? Remove all the tape from that area. That corner seems to dry out more quickly? Throw some more tape on the holes over there.

This is something I'm going to try soon-as I usually end up opening my holes during pinning and leaving the lid off for a few hours at a time as well.

And sure-I went a little overboard in an attempt to provide a lot of information.

Sometimes when I want to explain a process, I explain it in great detail.

My main advice to OP was to explain that he could easily up the FAE without adversely affecting his grow-which is always beneficial.

I have mushrooms! They are a little short and I do see quite a few fuzzy feet. It looks like a couple of them are opening up so I'll be harvesting soon. For the next flush I'll be focusing on improved FAE some more and hopefully get taller fruits?

Also, what is the best way to hydrate the sub? Is heavy misting the most popular tek right now or are you guys still dunking your monos? This is my first successful bulk grow so not sure what is considered best ATM.

Thanks!
