Terrance McKenna and the Elusinian Mysteries
    #23779151 - 10/28/16 04:00 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I've been listening through this lecture on the history of alchemy by Terrance McKenna, and in this piece that the embed starts on he says there's something called an "augum" wherein a list of words forms an acronym.

He further states that there is one such augum formed by the words barley, water, honey, and an unmentioned fourth word which form the word "MYCO" in greek.

The words honey and barley translate to méli and krithári, which could be the first and third letter to myko. I'm wondering if a more learned sage can offer correction and properly illustrate what ingredients to the kykeon he was talking about.

Here's the video clip:

Nobody knows what the real mystery was. IDK if its this clip but he says that some believe it was a sculpture of a woman's vagina, Huxley argues that it was an ergot beer, McKenna of course would like to believe that it was the mushroom.

Maybe he's on to something, maybe the people just listed water for no reason. I have come to the conclusion that it was definitely a mind altering substance, which one...its a mystery after all.

*Terence. One source lists goat cheese as an ingredient. Another lists γλήχωνι, pennyroyal. I searched for the acronym years ago but found nothing.

I have listened to that portion. So in summary he is saying how Robert graves worked out some cryptic code that was used which could reveal an essential element, is not THE central ingredient of the 'Kykeon' was a mushroom, and the psilocybin mushroom no less

But then goes on about some authors who speculated that this mushroom could refer to a fungus (forgot Latin name for now), but it can give convulsions. I have seen a documentary about this, regarding bread poisoning which has same fungus. So it doesn't make sense to me that they would use that. I am sure psilocybin mushrooms would have been abundant in ancient Greece. If so why both going after some fungus that can cause convlusions and then you would have to find other ingredients to counteract that? WE don't. We just pick the magic mushrooms!

I think that checking out Mike Crowley can throw light on this also. He looks into Eastern myths, and in one paper he kindly sent me, he is talking about how cryptically referred to in Eastern myth is how the god Indra was angered about Krishna and his devotees, and Crowley sees that what is really being referred to is how Indra (personification of the amanita muscaria fungi) who represents a priestly class who used it and did sacrifices etc, are pissed off with the more female centred magic mushroom cult, with Krisnha as personification of the psilocybin mushroom which is not into what the amanita boys are into, so the latter see it as a threat.

Notice how McKenna also talks about a rich kid who was busted for taking the kykeon and using it as a party drug, lol. This reminds me of the same attitude we are getting now from the therapists who want psychedelics totally under their control and thus put down and demonize 'recreational trippers'!
