Do I have a problem?
    #23777500 - 10/27/16 05:11 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I've got four small monotubs that have been in fruiting conditions about 5 days now. BRF spawn to coir/verm/gypsum casing (I've since learned that BRF is not the best choice for this method, I wonder if that has a lot to do with what's going on). Mixed the spawn and casing with a thin layer of pure casing on top. My spore syringes were about a year old too, although it doesn't seem like that was a problem.

I'm wondering if they're coming along nicely or if they're not doing well.  As you can see the mycelium had some trouble fully colonizing the top layer of casing and came in a bit patchy, but what's really concerning me is that I've got a few very small guys that have already opened, and there's not a huge amount of pinning elsewhere.  I guess they're not coming up en masse quite like I remember them doing.

The first image is the tub that's had the most activity, the second is the one with the least

I haven't been misting and fanning, gonna start giving that a try. I've since harvested the few little ones that were ready.  I'm wondering if I don't see much activity soon, should I maybe try flipping the "tub cakes" over, as they're more fully colonized on the bottom?

Any thoughts appreciated, thanks

Are you using some sort of hybrid monotub/SGFC thing on purpose? Because a monotub should only have about 6-8 2-inch holes in it (1.5 inch works for mini tubs, but those look dime sized.) Check out some monotub teks for what they should look like; it will make it a lot easier to dial in your tubs.

As you've since learned, BRF spawn is for making cakes, and while you can spawn those to bulk, they're best left intact in a shotgun fruiting chamber. Next time, use your favorite grain spawn method for your spawn jars. (Whole oats, the kind you feed to livestock, are an easy way to start)

It looks like you put your tubs into fruiting conditions before they were completely colonized; when you mix the spawn with the substrate, keep it sealed up (holes covered with tape) until the top of the substrate is completely colonized. Otherwise you have a higher chance of contamination and your sub won't be as ready for pinning.

Keep in mind that casings and substrates are two different things: substrates are what you mix your grain spawn with and what the mushroom grows out of. Casing layers are a top layer that goes on top of your mycelium once it's completely colonized the substrate to help it retain moisture, resist contams, etc.

I don't see any contams from here, but maybe someone who isn't on mobile can give it a closer look, so that's good anyway.

I can't make any recommendations on flipping your substrate blocks over, although it doesn't sound like a good idea.

no mold so id say youre alrightish, but you're not going to get much yield do to low myc and surface area, hopefully they'll spread, pick em after the spores drop, the second go around will be better!

Some good info there, thanks for the reply.  As far as the FAE holes, I made these tubs a while back and I think they were a product of whatever happened to be the largest drill bit I had around. That said, I don't have any problems with getting a proper polyfill density, and they've worked like a charm in the past. As far as the top not being fully colonized, I waited for them to colonized over a week longer than I thought I'd have to, and in that extra week there was barely any progress.  From what I read about some similar cases, the conclusion I came to was basically go for it, this seems to happen with BRF spawn, and if they're going to colonize more putting them in fruiting conditions won't stop them.

And yeah I totally forgot the word substrate heh.

Huh, purposely let the spores drop eh? I can see the logic there (unless the problem is not enough food in which case it seems like more spores wouldn't help). But most of what I've read leans towards dropped spores hindering growth

seeing as the substrate is barely covered you're good man, trust me.

What makes you say I'm good due to the substrate being barely covered?  That's exactly why I'm not so confident haha.  Assuming you mean barely covered with myc

I've had some decent yields from these tubs.  Nothing to write home about but enough to have made it worthwhile.

However I realized something today...I had intended to use 3 pints of spawn per tub, but I actually used 3 cups per.  Oops.  That probably has more to do with it than anything else.
