Could someone experienced have a quick look please? Trich?
    #23776717 - 10/27/16 01:10 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

This is my first attempt so thanks for having a look for me. Is this trich? It looks like it's beginning to become greenish in a couple spots. If so, should I cut the section out and fill the area with salt? Thanks

I cut it out and salted. Should I just scrape the casing layer right off and recase it?

No. That is way too infected dude lol. You can cut and salt the whole tub if you want shit is fuckin DONE, literally probably overrun by now, trich is generally twice as big than can be seen by its aerial mycelium. Start over. I'd recommend working on your inoculant/spawn. Do you use agar?

Bummer... No on the agar, this was one of those pre-made kits that come with spawn. Oh well, getting this far with it has definitely got me hooked. I'm going to spend a ton of time reading on this forum and come back and do it right. Do you happen to have any advice on which tek to start with?

I appreciate your willingness to research for yourself, don't see that often here...

Read through all of this:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19140341

and learn how to use the advanced search options:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php

Do those two things and you'll have nothing but success.

Thanks so much guys...

So, I've been reading non stop the last couple days... It's hilarious when you're starting out on here how one post leads to another and next thing you know you have 8 tabs open and can't remember what half of them were.... Such an awesome universe to jump into though and I'm starting to get my bearings.

Even though this was a kit and I'm going to do an entirely different tek from scratch, I wanted to get to the bottom of where this one went wrong and was hoping you could help?

It seemed to be going great. The straw substrate seemed nicely colonized... So I guess I'm wondering, did I contaminate it when I added the soil casing? Or was the contaminate in the mycelium and just took a while to present itself? Can trich exist purely in soil? How do you think it became contaminated?

That spawn jar looks so bacterial. Thick and wet grains looking squished against the jar. I guarantee that's the culprit.

Ok, I just found your advice here-

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23740329/page/1

As a total noob it's kind of mind blowing that a spawn that appears ok and then colonizes a substrate that looks ok too can be harbouring a dormant contamination like that! But your explanation about the myceliums natural defence system makes perfect sense.

So... Get into agar right off the bat is what I took from all this.

I really appreciate your help and I'll get back to you in the future with my results.
