Potting my Peyote!! [EDIT: New Additions 11/3!]

Just got a bunch of L. Williamsii buttons, about 2cm diameter each. Super excited to pot them in a few hours when I get out of work, what's the best soil mixture for these guys?
I've been told to use a 5:4:1 ratio of small rocks to perlite to worm castings. I've heard other people recommend other things such as sharp sand and bat guano. What do you guys use?
[Edit: Just got these guys potted now, they're in a 3/2/3/1/1 sand/rock/perlite/peat moss/bat guano soil.]

_____________________________________________________________________________________
11/3: More lophs to add to the collection, hoping to artificially create my own little bed of Lophs. Hopefully these little guys like it here, I'm gonna pot them in a more rocky soil mix than I used last time.

Thanks man! When you say you use pure rock on yours, do you mean you use really tiny crushed rock, like pebbles? I'm confused as to how these could be potted in just rocks. Seems like a really harsh growing environment for the little guys.

I've drooled over them myself but I hope they'll be much bigger and I'll have a much larger collection of them before I consume any, years in the future.

Most definitely will. I can't wait for the flowers! These guys are getting just close to old enough to have little hairy tufts protruding out the top. I'm super excited to be a keeper of cacti so sacred as these. The native Americans literally believed that this cacti was God, and here I have 50 of them on my coffee table.

Unfortunately only 20 of these guys are mine, the other 30 belong to a friend who helped me purchase all of these while I was in a tight financial spot. I hope to have a tray of seedlings started soon as soon as I can get some Williamsii seeds, and for my birthday I hope to purchase a 10-20 year old L. Williamsii, to be a good adult role model for all my little peyotes.

I've been told sand doesn't have great drainage and is better to use with seeds and seedlings and lophs like good drainage. I've also heard that you don't want to go over 10% organics with lophs. However, I have had lophs that looked like they were grown in a peat & vermiculite based mix though.
How tall are those pots? Looks like those lophs will have plenty of room to reach their roots down.

Apparently all cacti eat rocks. They produce a bacteria that very slowly breaks down rocks. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19284063/fpart/1

I went super light on the peat moss in the mix, just wasn't able to find a good variety of small rock at the store for potting. No worries though, there's lots of tiny rocks and both big and small perlite in that sand mix to help with drainage. I'll go heavier on the rocks next time I pot some, though. You don't think it's so heavy on the sand that it needs repotting, do you?
Didn't know cacti eat rocks. That's mind blowing.

Also these pots are 10"-12" deep, really big ones. My buddy is a pretty large scale cannabis grower and he had these lying around so we used them to give the lophs taproots lotsss of room to grow and stretch out.

Have you seen their natural envirnoment? There is almost very little actual soil involved.
But yeah i crush up granite and clay pots and limestone and other stuff and they absolutely love it.

My mix contains some topsoil and a little bit of wormcasts and kelp - but is mostly coarse grit and crushed marble.

Sounds like there's a lot of room for variation in soil mixtures...I'm sure mine being a little on the sandy side can't be too bad of a thing.

New little guys. So happy to get to take care of them. They all look pretty well hydrated except for a couple that have wrinkly buttons. Does this just indicate dehydration or what?

Any idea how old they are/what kind of soil the original grower kept them in?

I think they're around 3-4 years old, but that's really only my best guess.
Any idea? They look much more mature than some 2 year old seedlings I've seen, but I know there are some people who claim to be able to grow 2cm buttons in a year...

it's definitely possible to grow 2cm buttons in a year that's why it's so hard to gauge I'd guess around 5 years at least with the size of those taproots but it's anyone's guess

The previous owner said 3-5 years old, but I wasn't sure if it was on the younger or older end of that spectrum. Makes me happy to hear they're as old as I was told they were. One day they're be quite elderly little gentlemen.
