Hello Working on my 6010 rod vertical position. Love this rod it's nice looking and fun to run. Next I'll be working on my vertical V-groove. Currently in welding school, never had such a passion for welding, now I'm obsessed.
 Post some welding projects, guys!

Never welded but I got into soldering awhile back to work on guitars which has been very rewarding.
I would like to get more into electronics and metal working eventually.
Making jewelry/ wraps and stuff seems like fun. I want to get better at constructing stuff too.

I used to be a welder.
Did they teach you what the 60, the 1, and the 0 mean on your 6010 rods?

60 means 60,000 lbs tensile strength. The zero designates it as high cellulose which means you don't keep it in the rod warmer like a low hydrogen rod. As a matter of fact a rod warmer will mess that rod up.
6010 is a good rod. The puddle freezes fast and it can handle a little rust/oil/paint....

I went to a trade school for 2 years during high school and looking back, I think I should have taken welding instead of automotive. I could teach myself automotive as I don't plan on making that a career, but I could have used the skill of welding and experience from an earlier time.

Didn't know a warmer could mess 6010 up. The warmer is for only for 7018 rod, from what I've seen.
Hey, yea I don't wanna miss a lab. I could use all the experience I need. I learn a lot every session. So much to learn.

Rods that end in 5, 6, or 8 are low hydrogen and go in the warmer.

No we have an arc welder at work that my boss told me he would teach me to use. I work alot with oxygen/acetyline and I want to get my own tanks so I can fiddle around with using it to melt metals together at home, but at work I just use it to melt/carbonize plastics. I do maintain a couple sonic welders for fusing plastic parts but I don't think that really counts.

Apparently it isn't just an act he's a real person. I've heard people talking about working with him. They said he's not that great of a welder but he's fun to have around.

A buddy of mine put a can of beanie weenies in the rod oven one cold wintry morning and I just happened to be the one walking by when it blew up.
It exploded so hard it blew the door open. Scared the shit out of me and ruined all the rods.
Our boss made a new rule that if you got caught putting food in there you could just get your shit and go home, lol.

Couldn't you just puncture a few holes on the top then put it in the oven?

I actually have wanted to at least get into engineering as a hobby to try and design some various simple cheap stuff to save money.
Mostly music equipment like effect pedals but possibly even instruments one day. Very interesting stuff to me and it is becoming a huge market.
Boutique pedals can easily go for like 200-500$ depending on a few things like if they are vintage/ clones using vintage parts. Some are pretty simple.

That's cool man. Electronics is everywhere these days. I have like a million pet projects but I never finish anything that I don't have to.
The thing I have been thinking the most about is designing an herb vaporizer/blower like the volcano basically, but scaled down. I'm tempted to just reverse engineer that one, but I think if I got really geeky about design with materials, heating elements, and I would really like to make it with a plc but I am just alot more comfortable with analog.

I did some welding on my old Jeep. It wasn't pretty, after it was done I actually burned some large holes in the tub that I had to fill with silcone

I weld , mostly GMAW GTAW mostly mild steal some stainless. I'm a production welder right now. Build lots of the same parts every few days I get a new job to weld. To much mask time right now. But that's my own thang. 3 and 4 G certificate in all processes the 1 IN plate is a bitch. Keep your head out of the cloud and be prepared for at least one divorce . I've got welds in a nuclear power plant before I lost my mind. X ray welds are fun.
Try to get in one of the unions in a few years. Get some experience first and move on to the next job.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
