Caught my First Trout, Now I'm Hooked!
    #23773151 - 10/26/16 12:28 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I recently moved to Oregon (where trout are abundant) from Illinois/Iowa border (where trout do not exist) so I finally got out a couple times to try and catch some rainbow trout in a stocked lake near my house.  The first time I went out I just threw a little spinner I bought with now luck, and then had a night-crawler hanging from a bobber.  No luck.

I did a bit more research and set up what I believe was called a 'Caronlina Rig' with the weight ~16 inches from the hook which I had a couple floating trout bait marshmallows and a night-crawler.  Reeled in a decent looking trout that was legal to take (I think, I have never seen one before..) and took that baby home, cleaned it up and ate it.  This is only the 2nd time I have ate the fish I caught, but I definitely want to do it more often.  No pictures as my phone was broken at the time and I was waiting for my new one to arrive via snail mail.

I have a couple cheap $20 poles from Dicks that I am using now so I could upgrade, but I also want to try my hand at fly fishing which I have never done before.  A friend I work with is a big fisher and said he has an extra fly reel set up so we are hoping to go out some time and he can teach me a bit.

Anyone with experience have any pointers on trout fishing and/or fly fishing?  There are a few lakes around that are stocked, but there are a bunch of rivers in the area that supposedly are great for fishing so that is probably what I will fish most often.  We have a bunch of steelhead trout in the area as well so I may have to try my hand at that some time.

The biggest lake trout Ive caught in Oregon was when I was trolling behind a canoe about 70 yard line with a fly and bobber. Also, they seem to react most to the color orange. For shore fishing cast& reel, rainbows love to bite on de-shelled caddisfly nymphs. Canned corn works well in slower waters.
I'm not gonna give up any of my fishing holes because most have already been found out and contaminated. Id be careful where you choose to eat fish from, a lot of those rivers set off the Geiger counters, and the amount of pollution is only increasing. Fish accumulate all kinds of nasty shit, and in Oregon there is no limit to the amount of toxins washing into the streams. It's heart breaking.
Do me a favor, don't leave your trash by the creek. Don't get greedy and take more fish than you need. And pick up some beer cans and bottles as you're walking back to your car. Please be respectful, I would hope that one day I might take my son to the same fishing holes my great-grandfather showed my dad. There are still a few left.

Thanks.  I live about 500 yards from the middle fork of the Willamette and people trash the place under the bridge all the time.  I have thought about taking a trash can down there but that would just end up in the river I'm sure.  My landlord and his friend just went down there and blocked off part of the trail you can drive down with some big boulders, now there are 4 trash bags 5 feet in front of the boulders.. turds.  My girlfriend picked up a diaper that was left next to the hot spring we went to over the weekend.  I don't get why people think nature is just a big trashcan, it makes me sick some times.

I went down to the river a couple hours ago and caught two smaller guys, both this size.  The water is really high and flowing right now so my rooster tail couldn't handle the strong current, it just kept popping up over the surface.  I was able to find a spot that is usually 10-15 feet out of water that was calmer but wasn't too deep which is probably why I caught the smaller ones.

I think you have to be careful when handling trout you plan on releasing. They have a thin slime layer that's easily rubbed off. Of they even touch the ground they're just gonna die after being released.

Nice catches though. I just picked up bass fishing about a week ago and have hit the water at least every other day.

So I found out that fish in the picture and the other two I caught after that are Northern Pikeminnows.  They are native to the area, but feed on salmon minnows so there is a bounty on them in certain areas and they will pay you to catch them and kill them.  $5-8 a fish.  There is a scoreboard like thing online and there were many people that made $15,000-30,000 in about 4 months just catching those fish, and one guy that made $100,000 in that time. Looks like I know what I am doing next May - September ha.  If only I could make a hundred grand catching fish..

I've been fly fishing my whole life, and it is one of the most rewarding things ever.  I have only fished for trout in North Carolina and Tennessee so I am not familiar with the waters of Oregon.  If you get into fly fishing I would say go around to some fly shops and ask about "hatches", which is when particular flies, such as mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies, hatch.  I have a few books that outline the hatches in the eastern states, and I'm sure there are similar books about the hatches in the western states.

Also read up on how to read water.  Reading water is being able to observe the way the water flows around obstacles to determine where a trout will be lying in wait for the ambush.  Since flies have very few calories, trout look for the places where they can tread water without using up too much energy.

What The Phleg said is true.  Trout have a thin mucous layer on their scales that acts as their immune system.  If they are set on a rock or dirt or even if you pick them up with dry hands, the mucous comes off and 90% of the time they get an infection in a matter of days and DIE.  It's pretty easy to not harm them though; just make sure your hands are wet when you hold them and don't set them down on the ground.

I don't know you, but I have never met anyone who has tried fly fishing and didn't get hooked.  It is so much fun.  Even more fun than regular fishing.  Even when you don't catch anything, the act of casting a fly rod is so relaxing.  It's almost meditative.  I've always wanted to fly fish out west.

Peace.

What do u wanna know about fishing for trout? That picture isnt a trout btw thats like a pike minnow or something idk what u guys have out west. I dont like using the traditional carolina rig for trout especially if the area sees alot of fishing pressure. How much wieght are u using what test line? Trout like to see baits moving naturally in the water. With training they become vary wary or things not moving naturally stuck to the bottom. What ur doing is called plunking and certainly accounts for alot of trout caught. I only really like plunking deep pools with very slow current. Even then its not my style of trout fishing. I like to stalk trout actively moving around working alot of water fast. Plunking is the arena of the lawn chair army that plops down on the bank sits around getting loaded and catch like 2 fish in 6hrs. Ill out fish a live bait plunker any day. During a hatch forgettaboutit.

I have been floating down a ~3 miles stretch of river near me in my kayak about once a week and fishing as I go down.  I have caught a couple small rainbows and have been sure to wet my hand before handling them.  I usually catch around a dozen of those northern pikeminnows though, which is better than getting skunked each time I go out.

The only time I used the Carolina rig was when I was fishing in a lake.  Recently I have been throwing a spinner bait and I guess the pikeminnows are really attracted to those.  Hopefully I can get out with my buddy from work and give fly fishing a try soon.

Nice.  Those pikeminnows don't look too bad; just a good ol' fashioned junk fish.  They remind me of catching croakers when I go saltwater fishing here on the east coast.  Even though I'm looking for redfish and speckled trout, a few croakers are better than getting skunked!  Bowfin (aka mudfish) are the only junk fish that I really don't like.  They are nasty little creatures.  The first time I caught one it was slightly larger than my hand.  I had heard that they bite hard but I thought "he's just a little fella, he can't hurt", so I stuck my thumb in its mouth like you would a largemouth bass and the fucker BIT THROUGH MY THUMBNAIL!  No joke, blood was coming up through the top of my thumbnail.  They live in nasty swampy areas.  They remind me of trolls.

Anyway, yea, if you get a chance to flyfish for freshwater trout you won't regret it.  It may just change your life.  Catching my first freshwater trout on fly (it was a brown in Linville NC)and catching my first bonefish on fly (in Eleuthera, Bahamas) were two of the most epic experiences of my life.  To this day I schedule my yearly vacation around being able to flyfish for either trout or bonefish (been trout for the last 7 years due to it being cheaper to drive to the mountains ha).

OP, if you want to catch stocked rainbows as a relative novice...I recommend salmon egg or rainbow colored powerbait. That's what all the stock truck chasers around here use and it works really well. put it on a size 16 treble hook and drift it with the current with just enough weight to get close to the bottom. Like 2 bb size split shot in swifter water or 1 in not so swift. Place the split shot about 8" above the hook. Do the same in lakes because the stuff floats like marshmallows.

If you want a little more action for trout...try a 1/16th oz. black roostertail or a size 0 mepps spinner. Retrieve them just fast enough to keep the spinner blade spinning.

Fly fishing is the bees knees but takes a long time and a considerable amount of money to get to where you can catch trout regularly.....good luck!

I can vouch for the roostertail.  Trout LOVE roostertails.  Just be sure to keep any trout you catch on a treble hook.  When they get hooked treble-style they end up dying anyway.  The more you read about and experience trout health the more you realize just how much of a pussy trout are.  Just about anything kills them.

Yea, fly fishing can get expensive.  When I was in college I got a part time job at a local fly shop with the sole intention of being able to afford fly gear.  I needed a little extra money anyway, but I chose a fly shop over other options for part time work simply for the discounted equipment.  That was 11 years ago and I haven't bought any new equipment.  If you have to pay full price (assuming you get a decent rod/reel/line) plan on saving up for a bit.  I will say, however, the difference in performance between good rods/reels/lines and cheap ones is crazy.  Still, I don't think they should charge that much.  A bit of price gouging if you ask me, especially considering that spin reels and baitcaster reels have a lot more going on inside the reel.  As far as rods go, fly rods are definitely more complex than spin/baitcaster rods because of how much more of a direct effect they have on the quality of the cast, but they are still overpriced.  It's a shame that they can't let more people afford to get into fly fishing; it's such a beautiful pastime.
