PNW Matsutake (Tricholma magnivelare)
    #23771890 - 10/25/16 11:27 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Are these matsutake? I found these in the Cascade range while hunting chanterelles. They caught my attention as several were quite large. I thought matsutake grew in eastern Oregon, but when I picked one I noticed a strange smell and remembered Aurora's spicy-dirty sock comment so I took a few home to ID. I'm pretty sure on the ID from reading through Aurora's section in MD on them, but would like some other opinions. I usually ignore white agaricus looking mushrooms because they aren't as easy to identify as funky or distinctively colored mushrooms. I have never smelled "red hots" and never purposely smelled dirty socks so I can't verify if that's the smell, but it's definitely strange and pleasant.

Gills:
White

Stem:
Very solid, 2ish inches wide. White with fine rough textured rings above veil remnants hanging against the stipe and ragged brown below.

Cap:
White with yellow to brown ragged fleshy bits. Buttons had caps around 3 inches, the larger caps are around 8 inches across. Inturned margin in young ones. Irregular cap shapes.

Spore print color:
I did not spore print

Bruising:
No bruising, remaining white when cut

Other information:
Strange scent, really don't know how to describe it.

I'd like to know because I found one like that last week but have very limited exposure to tricholoma magnivelare. In working on my own ID I ruled out Catathelasma imperiale based on lack of decurrent gills. Not knowing enough about tricholoma in general I couldn't rule out Tricholoma caligatum on smell alone.

What kind of habitat were you in?

A forest of primarily douglas fir and hemlock, near a river. Specifically these were on the top of a hill about 300 feet above the water at around 1500 feet elevation. I wish I would have taken more pictures but I didn't know what I was looking at so the only habitat picture is pretty bad.

The ground was mossy over a lot of rocks. The chanterelles were growing lower where the soil was deeper and had more decaying matter around. I didn't see any chanterelles growing up where the matsutake were, but they were all around that hill. Here's another picture of the lower forest, I was focusing on this tree but you can see what the area looks like.
