I figured I would post in the MH&I forum as the topic most certainly applies.
I have cultivated Cyans for the first time! The stems on most of them are bruising and I was wondering what causes this when they have not been handled. There are cyans that I pick out hunting with pearly white stems until handled, so I wonder what factor is at play here.
Also, a question in regards to harvesting. I'm famillliar with cyans and when a good time to pick them is BUT, the cyans growing from my pot are short, and their stems are thin. I have found cyans like this in the past, but the mycelium I used to cultivate these were taken from some nice thick stemmed cyans. (As pictured below)

Of course my initial thought was "Get the genes from these guys!" but maybe there is more at play here than that, and I wondered if anyone can clue me in. I believe that a layer of leaves, grass, and/or debris can help them grow taller before the caps open(I did not do this) but I have found plenty tall cyans growing in the open and vice versa so is that not true? And what about the thicker stems? Do their stems grow thicker as they get older generally? Also, do their caps flatten out before they are done growing taller or not? do they gain meatyness/thickness in stem as they grow?
These are things I have tried to observe out hunting, but still have not been able to make any conclusions.
So many questions, I know but what I'm ultimately I'm trying to figure out here is why their caps are flattening out WAY shorter than the specimen I found, why their stems are thinner in comparison as well. Also why their stems are bruising as they grow.
Understanding these things will help in the field as well.
Such Beauties. I love em...

Thanks!

Pre-bluing of the stems is seen in natural patches of cyans too...but not that often. I think it's caused by the environmental conditions, i.e. temp, humidity. Difference in size of the mushrooms from fruiting to fruiting is also normal and I think caused by difference in the conditions as well. Probably conditions underground too, smaller active mycelial masses producing smaller mushrooms. On the other hand, yes, the mushrooms will most definitely continue to grow in size, mass, height, etc. as they mature. As for your mushrooms in particular, I can tell by lookin' at 'em that they're not 'little dainties.' They're destined to be nice fatties.

Thanks everyone! Such an amazing experience to watch them up close every day! I started the project last year so I was not expecting much but its pushing out maybe 30 mushrooms! They are about 10 days old, I might start harvesting soon dispite their lack of height. Throwing leafy debris on the smaller ones to see how they grow in comparison.
I appreciate the input David, makes sense evironmental differences are at play here. Thats what I was thinking... I thought maybe smaller fruits is because its in a smaller area perhaps? Like a fish in a fish bowl.

The bruising is normal, could be anything causing it.
I've read on here that larger cyans are produced out of larger wood chips. It's easier to start a patch with small wood chips but if you really want them to be taller and fatter you should add large chunks of wood on top. This spring of course, after your patch is done fruiting for the season.
Seems like a mix of small and large wood chips hits the right spot. Keep it up! They look beautiful!

Overall I wouldn't worry about the size of them. The first flush should be smaller than the next. If you dial in your environment they will grow as large as their genetics allow them.

Thanks for your two cents sirtalis! Interesting input about woodchip size. I started throwing in chips as soon as it was done colonizing the cardboard. The chips were a mixture of both smaller and larger chips, but not huge chips, only a few here and there.
I put about 3 inches of mycelium above the soil in the pot. Is that overkill? I was thinking of re-planting in the spring to a wider pot (not necessarily taller) to create more surface area and spread the mycelium out a little.
Do you think I should just leave it be it is interesting how they pretty much only fruited around the plant like a fairy ring. I would feel silly doing all of that to only still get fruits around the plant, or none at all even.

I'd go with wider rather than deep. The reason the fruits are concentrating around the plant base is because of moisture runoff. When it rains (or when you water), the water accumulates at the stem of the plant. Maybe take a look at how you are watering? Water the edges more to encourage the mycelium to spread out and find moisture.
Most of these tips should only be relevant before fruiting. At this point don't try to change anything up until spring.

Second flush in my experince has fatter fruits. I imagine it has to do with being farther in to the wet season. Mushrooms 90 % water thing. I find patches with the denses natural caseing and in lo lying areas are always fatter. Lots of pine needles like a sponge holding all the water rather than leaves plants and grass deflecting the water. Perhaps slowing your pots drainage a bit would fatten them up?

Really love this project. What kind of tree did you use? Did you reference any specific tek(s)? Very impressive and inspiring.

That Flush is Beautiiful
Great advice Everyone
The roots of that plant/or tree hold water + the drop off is why you got that nice ring i imagine....
- Nothingschanged is answering what i need to do for my pots next year: get a good spongy casing
this PNW rain keeps the pots nice n wet - like a dunk but it lasts for a few months
Also I second the wider pot this spring
but for this year..... Totally enjoy this Fall/Winter
Keep up the Great Work Whisty Glad to have helped you out

Thank you P.Goose, but Its really thanks to Mushrello, who has pots/beds of his own, for letting me pick his brain about some technical questions I had! So cool! I saw pictures of his pots last year that really inspired me to follow through with this goal.
I did not follow any specifc tek, other than growing the mycelium from stem butts to cardboard, just sort of winged it with intuition, research, and mushrello's guidance and suggestions.
I cant quite remember the name of the plant, but I got it because does well outside all year round, like a Rhodo. That was the main factor in choosing a plant for the project. I wanted a plant for many reasons like having a "decoy" for the public (only have a front porch for outside space), to hide them a little, and I figured its how they're found out hunting.

Mycelium holds water like a sponge. Better then the plants. That's why they have a symbiotic relationship. Mushrooms do fine by themselves. Plants to better with mushrooms. When it's possible you'll find them together.
