Calea Zacatechichi,
    #23770061 - 10/25/16 01:37 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

There have been a lot of posts about the real/fake bitter/sweet calea plants.

This is a good one

I have the bitter and sweet variety and since they are becoming good size plants, I thought I would share some pictures...

This is the bitter plant and I believe the real Calea

Yeah i dont get either bitter non bitter. I had one and it was really needy plant. Eventually fell by the wayside and and i never saw it again. I dont really buy into all the hype.

nor me. I think the bitter one is the real one (the ones with flowers). I haven't actually tried these plants but the bitter one has been the more needy one to grow. In fact the big one ended up as a leafless stick in the spring and has come back to what you see now. The sweet one was decimated by an animal - a rabbit I suspect but came back OK. I hope they all do OK in the winter as it is almost time to bring them in.

When I cut the stem of the bitter one to take the cuttings I could smell the aroma which was identical to the sort of after taste that I get with my commercial calea extract that I bought.

I haven't used my plants but I found that the secret to the Calea extract is to take it during the night after about 4 hours sleep and it will improve your dream recollection. I  quite like the taste but most people will find it the bitterest thing they have ever tasted.

I find that Silene Capensis works better for me and you take that during the day over several days.

I tried to germinate silene capensis once and failed miserably. Oh well. All intersting plants man.

Glad you posted about this. I've been doing lots of reading about calea and can't draw any conclusions. My plant has slender, triangular, serrated leaves.

I planted a few silene capensis seeds and every one germinated I must have had about 30 plants that I kept last winter and they all produced a bunch of seeds this year. I will bring a few in for this winter. The flowers bloomed at night during the summer and had a wonderful fragrance.  The secret with germination might be cold nights because I got my plants to grow in the fall and then I was stuck with them all over the house all winter. I shouldn't complain.

Now my coleus seeds which are supposed to be easy were a nightmare and I finally got two plants out of many many planted seeds.

Does it look like my two plants ? I think the bitter one is the real deal but that is based on what I was told and the stem smell when taking cuttings. I should try brewing and smoking the leaves.

I had one of the bitter varieties and I loved it. It was healthy and bushy but died over the winter before I could get any cuttings to root in water.
Would love to hear more about your plants, especially how viable the seeds were in your experience.

It more closely resembles the second, "sweet" variety. I have read that both varieties have oneirogenic effects, but have also read they aren't even the same genus of plant.

What's coleus?

Coleus Blumei

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plectranthus_scutellarioides

Quote:

Coleus blumei (now known as Plectranthus scutellarioides) has been reported to have very mild relaxing and/or hallucinogenic effects when consumed. The effects of the Coleus plant have not been explored very much by modern scientists but the plant has been known to have been used by the Mazatec Indians of southern Mexico who have a history of consuming this plant for its mind-altering effects.[18] It is not known what psychoactive chemical(s) exist in the Coleus blumei plant, as there has been very little research on the subject.[19]

Some people have claimed that they have experienced hallucinogenic effects from chewing several dozen fresh coleus leaves as a quid or brewing them to make a tea, although others have reported feeling no effects at all.[19]

Several authors of internet-hosted trip reports have claimed that smoking dried coleus leaves causes effects similar to smoking dried Salvia divinorum leaves, and the active compounds in the two plants may have similar chemical structures.[20][21] However, some authors claim that only the fresh leaves of the Coleus blumei plant are psychoactive.

If I rub the leaves of my sweet variety then my fingers will smell sort of tomatoey.

Yes I think that the two are completely different geni. This poster thinks that it may be a Bidens Alba

Quote:

I recently posted a comparative analysis of bitter Calea Zacatechichi, "non-bitter variety", and Bidens Alba (http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15987884).

It seems unlikely that the "non-bitter variety" is a Calea. Instead, it is probably a subspecies of Bidens Alba, an edible weed.

Mine look like the Bidens but I have never had mine flower which still leaves me in doubt.  It still doesn't look like flowering even though I have quite big plants now.

A few years ago i ordered an Oz. of Calea Zacatechichi, and found a few seed pods in the bag...

This is the 'bitter' variety; it has rounded leaves, and grows slow and bushy.

This is the 'sweet' variety; it has spear shape leaves, grows fast and tall.

Out of one ounce bag, i found five identical seed pods, so i planted and it grew both varieties.
This suggests they are the same plant, just different morphology, where round leaf variety is a
recessive trate, and the spear leaf variety is a dominant trate. That is just my own conclusion.

That's really interesting about the seeds. Last night I planted some seeds that came with my plant so it will be fun to see how they turn out.

Any experience ingesting coleus?

Ive been growing lovely Calea for around 3 years now indoors. I believe I have the bitter and non bitter varieties. One grows 4+ inch leaves and super fast grower in my window, the other has smaller leaves and throws out tons of new shoots. The bigger leafed plant ive been told was grown from seed 3 years ago, she nearly died because her main stems broke off completely from a windy ass day last year but she came back with vengeance and now rules my window next to my stunning solandra grandiflora plant. Ive drank the teas mixed with herbs like skullcap and didnt have any effects. I used fresh right off the plant and dried leaves too. I have about a pound or more im going to make an extract out of and try that maybe in a capsule or two before sleep. Anyone know what the actives are soluble in?
