Officially joining an MMA Gym today
    #23769859 - 10/25/16 12:21 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Today at 5:30 I am going to my first class at a local MMA gym. Going to do 2.5 hours of training there in boxing and no Gi Jujitsu,

My background is in Judo but I have been working on all aspects of MMA , training about 3 hours a day.

I am fully recovered from my recent injury and will be training as many days a week as possible, in Wrestling, boxing, muay thai, Gi and no Gi Jujitsu.

I have made the decision to dedicate the next ten years of my life to this and actually joining a class again is the start of my real journey.

Although I have been training hard every day solo training is not the same as fighting in a gym against other people.

I love all aspects of unarmed fighting and am completely obsessed with this. I watch hours of UFC a day to refine my knowledge and understanding of the game, and train while I watch.

Anyways, going to keep a journal of my experiences here. Probably going to get beat up pretty good and I love that feeling.

Got to rest now so I have enough energy for the classes tonight. Going to go high as balls on Cannabutter, as grappling and flower go together perfectly.

I am literally over joyed about this. :sun:

Posting some "before" / progress pics, as I plan to get much more muscular soon and want to see the comparison.

Anyone else doing martial arts?

My tip to people I work with in the MMA field is find a GOOD strength coach, do not listen to your mma coach on strength training many of them are lagging far behind and still having guys run around with dumbells and etc.  I have only worked with 2 MMA fighters and both were surprisingly weak and we got them much stronger.  If you are serious about it as much as you sound then a good strength coach that will teach you how to do the lifts, proper programming, etc is very worth the time and money.

Good luck.  I remember taking Muay Thai Kick Boxing at an MMA facility and after that class it was straight to BJJ.

I puked my first 3 kick boxing classes cause for one I was out of shape and two it was pretty intense/exhausting.  I learned some shit though.

Thanks for the tip re: strength training.

About how I stay motivated, its easy- I feel most alive and most happy when I work out. Exercise is how I deal with stress and depression. It helps me alleviate anxiety, and gives me euphoric feelings.

Focusing on martial arts helps me block out all the things I stress about. And I just love it. Its incredibly fun.

I had to put my Judo on hold when I was working on my university degrees but now that I am done school all those hours I spent researching and writing papers can be refocused on martial arts.

But basically its easy because its fun. First thing every morning my body is just primed and read. I literally crave the feeling I get from it like a drug.

I have become an exercise addict, so its not difficult for me to keep up, it would be difficult not to.

It looks like in MMA that's what you want to do:  do them hardcore so the ref stops it.

Woot! Just finished my first no-Gi jujitsu class! That was a fucking blast! I tore through the class and submitted everyone until I got to the teacher, and then he put me in my place and submitted me like a dozen times. That was fucking awesome!

:jolly: new emote?

MMA is awesome. I loved muay thai, boxing, karate and BJJ for a number of years. I lost absolute all interest during the period of my mental illness and drug addiction. Now I am the healthiest I have ever been and also free from the shackles of addiction, I am going to get back to it ASAP. I live in a small town now so there's no actual MMA gyms, just boxing gyms, shotokan and kyokushin and a bunch of normal guys at a gym do MMA together (no official teacher tho) but the damn PAWS sleep disturbances is the only thing holding me back. I forced myself to up stay 24 hours 2 days ago, went to bed at 6pm, got up 2am. Kept awake yesterday till 8pm, got up at 4am.... TODAY.... I went to bed at 9pm and I was still lying in bed at 3am wide awake. On the computer now, hitting the 24 hour mark and I only feel slightly tired :makesmecry: Making a big nutritous meal because the insomnia maybe worsened by lack of calories, etc :kingcrankey:

Right now, I am doing 3 days, 1 day off, 3 days on. HIIT, plyometrics, calisthenics, skipping rope, etc. Feels so great. Exxercise is 100% neccasry in fully recovering from drug addictions and finding that "reason to live" (pretty much how Moonshoe explains it, exercise is THE worlds best anti depressant and mood booster) You do 30 minutes of HIIT, maybe some other stuff thrown in.... you feel like on the top of the world for half of the day.

edited this in:

Exercise (consistently) comes with a determination to improve yourself. You find exercise that YOU.... YOU... love doing and have fun doing it. Then, it awakens your mind even further with "I will now ONLY consume highly nutritious food that will aid my progress in the exercises. I will feed it food that benefits, no junk food, no shit, no poison".
That's the basis of how I feel it happens, but it also goes much deeper than that, into every aspect of your life.

Also I feel nowadays its unfortunate MMA is seen as a "pure" fighting sports (i.e. the guys who go cause it'll "make them tough") when it is much, much more than it. It is an art. It is about perfecting yourself in every aspect. It is a meditation. I find it very therapeutic to visualize and critique myself on every body movement I do

Yeah sorry guys, not the best written post from me. I've been up for 24 hours :jolly:

I am so sore all over. I love this feeling. I remember I felt this way after every judo class.

I was trained at a gym where we were all training to compete and the teacher made us go hard, so I think maybe I was a bit too intense today.

Oh well, live and learn.

What a blast! I just have to be so careful not to get injured.

I am sure you're nailing down your nutrition but I like hearing other peoples opinions/preference so what you consuming daily?

Gotta be careful as well. It's always awesome to go "FUCK YES. I WILL TRAIN THE HARDEST AND STRONGEST I CAN. NOTHING CAN STOP ME" but be realistic and try to limit your itself. Going over the top, especially when a beginner, is going to lead to over training and injuries, both combined which may keep you sedentary for longer than wanted.
Fuck ye, push as hard as you can until you nearly vomit or your muscles can't function without a small break but.... do not attempt to do what the experienced and veterans are doing. This is not an ego contest.

:highfive:

I remember my old boxing coach talks. He'd give a word of warning to every new person in his old but intimidating voice "This is not a ego competition. This is a place come to learn. We spar, you fight but not hit with the intent to damage others".

Agreed, while size may not matter in a fight sometimes. A lot of the times strength/power output is a factor. A good example is a guy I know whos 128 lbs, can easily keep up with me in the weight room if not lagging behind 10-15 lbs. Dude is strong as fucking apeshit for his size. Violent as all fuck to boot. Personally would take extreme caution before even thinking of fucking with him. Someone who knows how to fight and can execute powerful strikes is deadlier than any technique fanboy. Both are needed.

I also see you post a lot about supplements OP so I'm sure you've got that down already.

Man, I know that joining this mma gym was the best choice  I ever made, because I am so happy and euphoric.

I was so jacked up on adrenaline I barely slept last night even though I was physically exhausted and sore but I woke up feeling happy anyways.

This is my favorite thing in the world. Fighting is the best stress relief in the world, along with sex.

I wasn't sure how well my Judo skills would work in Jujitsu class. Turns out very well. They didn't know how to deal with some of my Judo skills and I was dominant in most matches. I choked out three people and put one in an armbar. I even got a rear naked choke. One more advanced student submitted me like four times but then I submitted him.

The teacher submitted me like 8 times , and usually it took him like 10 seconds. That's how it works, the new guy from another gym and style comes and starts pinning and submitting the students, the teacher has to kick his ass and put him in his place to protect the honor of the gym and the style.

I am happy that my Judo skills means I am not at all starting at square one. I am already good enough to beat many , and now I can learn techniques we don't do in Judo like ankle locks.

Re: whoever asked, this gym teaches Jujitsu, probably Brazilian.

Judo is a Japanese style but they overlap, but Judo is more of a sport so more dangerous techniques like small joint manipulation or leg locks are not allowed.

But the Jujitsu guys couldn't handle my explosive takedown and with all of the guys except the teacher I was able to blast right past their guards into a dominant top pin position where I could work for the choke.

Also some pin techniques they aren't familiar with .

I accidentally flipped a guy into the wall trying to get him off me because he was close to choking me out. He got mad at me and I apologized but still felt embarrassed and bad.

Other than that it was unbelievably fun and satisfying and I can't wait to go again. I hate that I can't go today or tomorrow but I am doing a wrestling classes on Friday which will be awesome.

I am going to be alternating Jujitsu, wrestling, Muay Thai  and boxing , and also doing weight lifting and yoga .

The truth is I am extremely strong and can bully and overpower most opponents even without great technique.  Plus my height and long legs are a big advantage.

I am so grateful for the crazy hardcore intense passionate Egyptian Olympian who was my Judo teacher. She instilled a fire and heart into me and built up my strength. She forced me to compete, and gave me a solid base in takedowns, takedown defence and grappling, which is a huge chunk of what you need for mma.

The missing piece is striking.  Excited for my beginner Muay Thai class.
