ID Request - Possible Azures * 1
    #23768923 - 10/25/16 03:37 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Hi,

Last spring I bought some Azure (Astoria Ossip) spawn and spread it about a bit. Nothing last autumn but this year these popped up:

There are some cyans growing very near by but they look different (archetypal wavy caps, bigger and more mature)

They don't look like the pics I see of azures as they don't have that classic UFO shape, but they don't look like the cyans I have growing already. Fairly sure they are some psilocybe as they very rapidly bruise blue. I am curious if I left them a few weeks whether they'd get larger and start to look more saucer-ish.

So I am not sure, are these Azures, cyans or something else entirely ?

More pics available on request

* Habitat: wood chip pathway with some vegetative growth.
* Location: UK
* Spore print color: black

Well the spore color was definitely not black. You can see the purple brown print in the first pic. They look like dried up cyans to me

They are noticeably different to the three cyan patches growing near by. The cyans on the other patches have larger, more mature fruits, with undulating caps.

Does allenii grow in the UK?

OP, I think you should wait for more to grow, and get decent pics of them in habitat.

They are definitely not azures. They look like dried P. allenii if you compare them with examples on MO

Perhaps there was a mix up with the supplier or something? Or the orderer :smile: They do both start with A.

Psilocybe cyanescens. Allenii gills look slightly different.

Sorry, I overlooked his location - when asking for azurescens I automatically assumed PNW.

So that points toward cyans, obviously.

I took some habitat pics but they don't do it justice. I'll try and get something a bit more demonstrative tomorrow, with the nearby cyans for comparison.

I'd love to keep an eye on their development through the weeks but I am only staying here for a few more days. I'll leave some of the pins and maybe next time I come back this way they'll be fully mature.

What else apart from the undulating caps can I look for to distinguish Azures from Cyans ?

Are there different strains of cyans ? I have seen them referred to as Wakefield and also as Ballard, probably a few other strain names if you dig around.

Here are the shrooms which have grown from 'azure' spawn...

And here are some nearby cyans (with bonus stinkhorn) :

The cyans are much larger and more mature, it could be that those few yards have made a big difference somehow, more shade or something. Also of note the cyans in the grass - this was a woodchip pile last year but the grass has grown over it. Wasn't expecting to see any here this time so it was a pleasant surprise when I noticed them.

Apologies pics still aren't the best, I'm not great with cameras. Can try and get better photos on request.

I'd be amazed if it doesn't turn up from time to time. I'm not saying the mushrooms in question are P. allenii, but that is my position on the question I'm responding to.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Never seen a cyan have green bruising like that.

Not sure if azures grow in the UK, definitely go back to that spot. u may have a unique and rare UK species :grin:

Yea id say they are azures.  Cyans are more "flimsy".  Maybe water a little more often and ensure plenty of food for the lil guys.  Idk.

I'd bet they do not fruit next year.
