help identifying instruments that show nerve activation
    #23768883 - 10/25/16 02:53 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Are there any scientific instruments which can be used to see which nerves are being activated along with info is being passed along the nerves? Would this be two separate instruments? Is what i am talking about possible?

Thanks

theres the electroencephalogram, which is wear they put a net on your head covered with electrodes that map electrical activity in the brain.

you can also measure the electrical activity of single neurons using microelectrodes.

theres also PET scans, CT scans, and fMRI scans that show brain activity, but they don't record *electrical" activity. PET scans radioactively label biologically active molecules (like oxygen) to track brain activity (can be used for other body parts). Activated areas of the brain have higher radioactivity. The fMRI's look at blood flow in the brain (activated areas receive more oxygen/blood). CT scans  use X rays to show a structural image of the brain or another body part.

I don't know much about the peripheral nervous system, so if you were talking about a true nerve i don't know as much. There is microneurography that records nerve impulses in the periphery, and I know you can activate the vagal nerve with interleukin-1beta injections. Additionally, electrocardiograms record the electrical activity of the heart.
