Grain: Barley vs. Wheat vs. Oats vs. WBS

Hey guys, lost my mycotopia account from 15 or so years ago. Shroomery seems most alive these days! These are cheap may be much easier to find than rye berries:
Organic Whole Barley Organic Whole Oats Organic Whole Wheat Organic WBS
Has there been much testing on all these grains? (except WBS obv a classic) Ive found some threads on oats, seems they are easier to cook, anything too starchy & sticky would be a problem
WBS and wheat are the smallest grains, problem being a more dense and less airy grain
thanks

Years ago when I grew I used brown rice. Got fairly good results using it alone but it had the sticky starchy issue. It did colonize decent and I got results that made me happy. Its now been 10 years and this time around I am using it mixed with vermiculite. I have been soaking it for 12 hrs. I read soaking longer like a day or 2 ferments it, and allows the mycelium to colonize it easier so I Will try that. Anyways I rinse it very very well. Let drain a while and mix with DRY vermiculite. This sucks up the extra moisture. I mix it at about 1 part vermiculite to 2 parts whole brown rice. It has been colonizing fast, showing no real contamination, and when shaken it is breaking apart nicely. Without vermiculite it is a stuck, messy clump. Just thought I would share.

Personally don't like working with oats as they are really a fatty grain and haven't worked well for me as bag spawn. Lots of people like them on this forum though. Wheat has worked well in my experience with it. Never tried barley. WBS is too dirty and messy. I also have liked working with sorghum (milo) for its size because it offers a lot of inoculation points for quick G2G colonization. Rye is easy enough for me to get ahold of and I've been working with it the longest, so it is my favorite. Like bodhisatta said, use whatever works and is convenient for you!

Have you tried them in bags?
I run jars for 2hrs at and bags 2.5 hours, 15-17psi depending on how lazy I am feeling.
Never had any issues with oat jars, just bags

Never had problems with oats in jars but agree on crappy bags results. For bags i use cracked corn its a scratchy mess for jars. Wheat is hard to find here but I've used it a few time it breaks up nice in jars but sucked in bags. There are a lot of grain prep teks out there. Oats are common because they are very commonly fould in feed stores.
I recordment starting out no matter the grain with a simple 24 hour soak, drain and air out for a hour . Than load up and pc two hours, it never fails me when testing out a grain. Even wbs with cracked corn and peanuts in it.

Nah, we sterilize for a window of opportunity. Complete sterilization of grains would take even more time
I agree oats didn't do well with truffles for me

also thought I should mention some organic grains are treated with large amounts of bacteria.
just go with regular grains to be sure and they are cheaper.

if organic grains are treated with bacteria, and regular are treated with pesticides/fungicides i think id rather go with bacteria. but this really isnt consistent from shop to shop, country to country. i just think if regular have a chance of being covered in fungicide, it counldnt really get much worse..

I used to swear by whole oats. I still use them because they are the moste available to me but I gotta say they have given me a lot more contam issues than any other grains I use and lower yeilds than WBS. Wheat would be my choice out of those grains.
