Sick of ordinary strainers? Got $15? 3

If so, try this out!

What you will need: PVC pipes Elbows/corners T's Screen Zip ties
Measur your sink. I measured my entire sink and then also considered the middle section. You will want 2 sections so you don't stress the screen when you dump in your grains. Also, you will want to create a bowl shape in each section. Once you have your measurements, cut your PVC pipe to fit the sink. Then, double up your screen, lay it on top of your PVC pipe, making sure to wrap the screen around the pipes for extra strength. Then, begin fastening the screen with your zip ties.
If you just make the screen a flat surface, it doesn't dry correctly because it rapidly cools and doesn't allow for steam evaporation.
Next project, I will be lining my pot that I soak my grains in with a mosquito net type of material. Lay the grains inside of it, do my rinse, then I can pull the net out and drain the water. No more worrying about having to go slow so you don't dump grains

Thanks. The strainers I was using kept allowing for grains to fall through, couldn't fit very much, and took forever to cool so I could load my jars. This way, I allowed to strain, once all the water was gone I removed it from my sink, did back and forth and circle motions for about 3 minutes, then I set them back and left them alone. They were ready in like 20 minutes. The screen only cost me $6 dollars also. The piping I already had laying around.
On a side note, each of the corners isn't just a regular corner, it's like a 3 way attachment. This worked out perfectly because I was able to use the corners to create the shape, and the additional piece allowed it to be raised up from the surface of the sink which allowed airflow under the strainer...if that makes sense.

there's a better window screen that's called "pet screen" it's just much more durable. that may be a good idea for these strainers.

This is fiberglass which I wasn't too fond of at first. Thought it might melt but it didn't. I wanted like steel mesh/screen but I didn't go myself. I had my wife pick up some while she was in town. It wasn't what I would prefer, but was $6 and worked just fine. Now I just have to see how long it will hold up. I think it'll be okay though, especially since I doubled it up.

the pet screen is fiberglass too just about twice as thick with the same hole size so a little bit less holes overall but if the regular shit doesn't hold up the pet screen is pretty durable. I used to repair screens and windows for years

That's really cool man. I guess you poke holes in the screen to feed the zipties through?

I thought about doing something like this. Now I just strain and use tubs to dry oats though. You need surface area to dry so strainers aren't the best unless they are huge. Strainers are good for straining.

No, don't poke holes. It will weaken the screen and cause the potential to rip. Instead, force the zip tie through the screen. I got zip ties that were probably like 6 inches longs, and maybe like 2-3mm wide. The zip tie has a point on the free running end that allows you to push through the screen. Also, make sure that you leave some slack in the screen so the weight of the grains doesn't pull the screen making the hole bigger and bigger.

Nice pirate. Heres my strainer, but I usually do about 25lbs of dry grain at a time. If I redid it I would make the bottom have even more V angle so it drains even faster.

Are you guys running multiple PC's at once? That's the problem I'm facing. Grain Prep alone sets me back 24 hours, and that's just for one batch of 9 jars. Not to mention the PC time and the cool down period. All of which was taking place in my PC, but I use my PC to prep my grains. So I have to wait from start to finish for one batch of jars, before I can even begin prepping the next round.

My grain prep is a 50lb bag of rye per day. This makes 17-18 4 qt spawn bags, or 72 quarts of hydrated grain spawn. Sterilizer situation is 2 AA 25X and 1 AA 75X, 2 cycles through the machines, about 8 hrs, and the 50lb bag of grain is sterile.

Damn! This is a full time job for you huh! I would love to expand into something credible. But I've just been running 1-2 monos at a time. Once I buy another PC and dehydrator I will pick things up. I'm trying to imagine the hauls you're pulling per week with a cycle like that. Props

How do you figure 40-60 qts? Are you using bags instead of jars?

Yours can actually fit the 10 jars? I have a mirro, but I can only fit 9. But I let it drop pressure and cool down naturally. I might try releasing pressure and taking it out prior to cooling so I can get more shit done.

I'm really looking forward to trying the mosquito net inside my pot I soak my grains in. I'm going to use the same concept in a steel barrel with my straw prep for oysters using a large fishing net. I used to pasteurize my straw in the bath tub, but that was just difficult and messy. Instead, I'm going to string up a steel barrel, and hoist it above my small little portable bon fire pit. Make a small fire to maintain the temp at 170. The fire will allow the water in the barrel to reach desired temps. Doing it this way will allow me to prep a shit ton of straw at once
