Hi there, I have noticed that there seem to be a lot of mushrooms similar to liberty cap Mushrooms, Now I've got a head on my shoulders, but I'm wondering if there is there any chance of misidentifying liberty caps for some deadly poisonous variety? I can deal with tummy ache as an occupational hazard, however I just want to make sure my kidneys and liver survive. Also are there some similar looking varieties that will give you tummy upset but no long-lasting damage?
Kind Regards Gin.

Not if you study the specifics properly, and post good identification requests prior to consuming your finds.

P. semilanceata has characteristics that make it unique. Learn those characteristics, and then compare your mushrooms to make sure they have ALL of them.
It also helps to look at LOTS of photos.

Various online sources sometimes list lookalike species - Wikipedia, for example, if you read the second paragraph here, lists some poisonous look-alikes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybe_semilanceata#Similar_species
Don't take that for an exhaustive list. There may be other poisonous mushrooms that look similar.
I completely agree that you should post a good ID request of your finds before eating anything! Look in the stickied threads at the top of this forum for a template to use.

Read this and pay attention to the details. If a mushroom matches, after honest and attentive observation, all of the details by which is it described, or even merely those which can be seen with the unaided eye, it is either Psilocybe semilanceata or close enough as not to matter for any purposes but the academic ones. Does that put it well?

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

some dude on social media just ate a bunch of mycena n still insisted he tripped, stay away from orange gills (conocybe, galerina) and you should be fine. conocybes when young can look like semis but have orange gills always gillcheck, read up as much as possible on them in every stage of growth, how they look sunkissed etc and it should be easy
-------------------- I give you the choice of 2 pills.
With each containing one of the following: Cyanide... Psilocin... Would you take the risk? Didn't think so. This is why Positive Identification prior to consumption is important.
