Psilocybe subaeruginosa in MI
    #23766364 - 10/24/16 10:26 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I spawned some Psilocybe aucklandii in pine mulch spread around my home several years ago and had them pop up from time to time, but they were often slowed down by the early arrival of snow. This fall, some pleasant cool temperatures with a few light frosts resulted in this delightful surprise:

I took the more mature bluing specimen above and will print it:

The thing about aucklandii is they have a wicked driving intensity that I am not all that fond of. They are pretty though!

Where was the source of what you are calling P. aucklandiae?

It's either P. subaeruginosa mislabeled as P. aucklandiae if it came from a noob hunter.

Or if you really did have P. aucklandiae you probably live where P. allenii occurs naturally and have P. allenii from natural occurrence.
P. aucklandiae
wont fruit without micro-organisms and clay, so I'm certain you don't have P. aucklandiae.

It looks like either P. subaeruginosa or P. allenii.

Agreed, these look like P. subaeruginosa, either way it's certainly something from Section Cyanescens.

Sorry op, this is definitely not P. aucklandiae.

inski is the only person who has ever cultivated P. aucklandiae sorry.

I'm not doubting the fact that you sourced actual P. aucklandiae spores, made grain spawn and put P. aucklandiae mycelium in pine mulch.

But that mycelium will not have produced fruits because it requires micro-organisms in clay substrate for the myc to produce fruits.
If this is the case then one of the species that occur naturally from your area in Section Cyanescens has found the pine mulch you put P. aucklandiae myc in.

It's either that or you got P. subaeruginosa spores mis-labeled as P. aucklandiae so you have actually cultivated P. subaeruginosa.

Inski, may I ask what the micro-organisms are called and where one should go to find information about how to isolate these micro-organisms with the dilution to extinction method?
Any good reading you can recommend about the micro organisms in the clay substrate and the dilution to extinction method to isolate them, or can you give any advise or any wise words for it?

Oh duhh, MI = Michigan:facepalm:
I'm fairly certain that P. allenii does not occurs there, but do not quote me.

That whittles it down to being mis-labeled as P. subaeruginosa I suppose.

I obtained spores in 2006 from a New Zealander who lives in Auckland.  Perhaps she mis-identified them.  They are definitely active though.  The print is black and they blue readily when handled.  To my eye, they look exactly like the photo posted by Mushroom John here:

http://www.mushroomjohn.org/news/idspeciespaucklandii1.jpg

They do not look like the subaeruginosa pictured here, where the gills are spaced further, are lighter colored and the caps curl up:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybe_subaeruginosa

Additionally, they are growing in proximity to coniferous shrubs.  So a mycorhizal relationship is likely the case here.  Finally, the soil under the chips is heavy clay.

I am happy to send anyone who could properly identify them a voucher specimen; Alan Rockefeller, you reading this thread?

Yeah bro, as suspected, she would have printed you P. subaeruginosa, you got P. subaeruginosa mate.
Perhaps she did not know about the different species and binomial nomenclature and just thought the magic ones were "aucklandii" because shes in Auckland.

Actually, they look nothing like the P. aucklandiae specimens in that photo by John Allen.
Mushroom John's image is clearly P. aucklandiae, just shit quality.

Also, P. subaeruginosa has heaps of marcoscopic variance from patch to patch.

I saw some aucklandii photos from AllDay420; the above are definitely subaeruginosa.  I stand corrected.

Those images elfstone posted are from here.

Those images inski posted are from his second P. aucklandiae cultivation success.

Most interesting photos.  Is there a write up of the method used to get the aucklandii to fruit?

inski is the only person to have ever pulled P. aucklandiae off.

No writeup as of yet, but if you read all of inski's notes on P. aucklandiae cultivation then you can sort of figure out what to do.

If we are lucky inski might share some wise words on P. aucklandiae cultivation.

A few more pics of the progress of this species. It has become fully naturalized on my property. I did not do anything except put more pine mulch around my home in the spring, and voila! - up they pop in the fall. I am taking some stem butts and putting them into more beds, including many in rest circles we have in our neighborhood for the walkers. I am hopeful that we can get these things naturalized here in the great American midwest!

If you look closely at the following picture, you will see little ones popping up in many locations (the big mushrooms in the background are fake for "decoration."

Here are some close-ups of others coming in:

and more:

and a few more:

and, again, more near the sidewalk:

How did you spawn those? I got plenty of pines around where I live. It would be nice to take a trip with my dog around the neighborhood , get home and take another trip
