I think those might be Tubaria furfuracea.

What features do you think make the distinction?

Lack of annulus, and the white veil remnants on the upper side of the margin. Also a bit of a rosier blush to the stipe. The darkening of the stipe bases does look like Galerina, though.

Here's some more pictures of the Galerina marginata growing from moss on a boulder. My guess is they are growing off of all the dropped Douglas-fir cones, twigs and needles that the moss grew over. It's developed into a fairy ring, sorry for the crappy phone camera photos.

I saw these Gyromitra earlier today. I keyed them to G. infula based on the time of year, their growth on wood, and color of the stipe and cap. Aurora's description says the caps are generally smooth though, and these caps are extremely wrinkled like G. esculenta. This one was beefy
kicking myself now for not moving those yellow leaves in the background
From the Wikipedia page on gyromitrin:
Quote:
Gyromitrin is a toxin and carcinogen present in several members of the fungal genus Gyromitra, G. esculenta. It is unstable and is easily hydrolyzed to the toxic compound monomethylhydrazine, a component of some rocket fuels. Monomethylhydrazine acts on the central nervous system and interferes with the normal use and function of vitamin B6. Poisoning results in nausea, stomach cramps, and diarrhea, while severe poisoning can result in convulsions, jaundice, or even coma or death. Exposure to monomethylhydrazine has been shown to be carcinogenic in small mammals.

I think that second pic is pretty darn cool! Do you think they're growing from woody debris under the moss?

I think this might be Amanita smithiana, I'm not sure is it's deadly but it looks like it would make you sick.

It's gorgeous! Looks like someone sculpted a mushroom out of snow.

Brad got a lot better pictures of it with his DSLR, I've been using my phones because it's easier. I was a really pretty mushroom. It's was soft and fluffy like holding a cloud in my hand, which got covered in cottony stuff.

Those pure white Amanitas are tough to photograph. Your pic looks great.
Did the base have a long tap root? It's really easy to break them off.

It didn't have a taproot that I noticed, it was growing inside of a crack in a tree so getting it out was a little difficult and it might have broken off. The mushroom was really delicate so its hard to tell considering.

Not sure if this is deadly but it's a very interesting secotioid Galerina species.

"secotioid Galerina" - I did not know there was such a thing! Did you collect this? Have you collected it before?
