Glad to see this thread getting some traction again! I do landscape construction and arborist work for a living and had a fun tree planting this week. We put a cherry tree in at a catholic church, and I noticed a large patch of Galerina marginata coming out of the top of it's root ball. I giggled the whole time and didn't explain it to the crew until after we left.
Galerinas contain amatoxins, same as the deadly Amanitas. Amatoxins were a great tool for assassination a few hundred years ago, the effects take a day or two to kick in, and are devious and hard to detect. That would give a potential assassin a lot of time to get clear of the area before it got hot. Several popes over the centuries have died from mysterious poisoning symptoms that match amatoxin poisoning, notably Pope Clement VII ( a Medici).
So, we put pope poisoners in the yard of a catholic church
Whoops!

Funny story, but it sounds like you planted a tree with dying roots.
